When I woke up from my comfortable sleep I did what I always did on school mornings. I got out of bed, got dressed, ate breakfast, got my backpack on, said goodbye to mom and started walking down the street meeting the neighbor kid on the way. We were now in second grade and every day of the year before was even better than the day we met. Today we were walking to school like any other day. It was starting to get cold outside so I started rubbing my hands together. "Mina did you not bring gloves again? Cmon we been over this." I shook my head and laughed. He took my hands and held them in his own gloved hands. He held them all the way until we got inside the school. I kind of had to walk sideways in order for him to have both of my hands. When we got inside we sat down and listened to the teacher talk but also didn't and told each other jokes. "Mina, Byungjoo, quiet please." Our second grade teacher just stared directly at us with a straight face and his eyebrows raised. We covered our mouths and tried not to laugh any harder. When it was finally time for lunch we got in the lunch line to get our food. Once we did get our food we were going to sit down these three girls walked up to us. "You look as gross as your food." "I think the food looks pretty good" Byungjoo said shrugging. I giggled, "That's true, this is actually my favorite school food." The three of them scoffed and walked away and we found our seat at one of the tables. "What was that about?" I ask Bjoo. "They're just jealous Mins. Don't worry." He talked with his mouth full. "Yah don't talk with food in your mouth!" "Sorray." "No you're not your mouth is still full!" I laughed and ate my food. We went back to class for about another hour or so then could go home. "Cmon Mina you slow poke." I was getting my backpack on pulling my hair out of the straps. "I'm coming calm down Joo." "Joo?" "What? It's easier to say." He tilted his head back laughing as I sped walked in front of him out of the elementary school. He caught up to me and we walked side by side. "Hey Mins, knock knock?" "Who's there?"
"Banana" "Banana who?" "Knock knock" "Who's there?" "Banana" "Banana who?" "Knock knock" "who's there" "Banana" "Joo we been through this before" "Mins just say banana who I'm not done yet" "Ok ok banana who?" "Knock knock" "Joo what the heck? Who's there?" "Orange." "Oh ok orange who?" "Orange you glad I didn't say banana?" "Yes, yes I am." We laughed
And kept walking. "Can you believe Mr. Choi told us to be quiet?" "I know right?" I said "I was trying so hard not to laugh. You're really very funny Bjoo." "I know I am Mina that's how I live." "I thought pop tarts were how you lived?" "I mean ya pop tarts too, I think that's what fuels the funniness." "From strawberry pop tarts?" "Yup," he looked at me, "Maybe you should eat more of them I mean I'm way funnier than you." "Am not I'm the funniest person I know plus also I only eat the strawberry pop tarts when I'm at your house remember? Mom has strict food rules." "Ah yes there's not a lot of chocolate or sugary stuff in your house is there?" "Nope there is not. I haven't told her that I eat those pop tarts but I'm afraid she knows." "How would she know?" " I dunno she's a mom she knows all sorts of things I think she doesn't know." I tripped on something and realized it was the stairs to my front door. "Wanna come in? We don't got pop tarts but we got apples." "Yum." Bjoo said with some enthusiasm. "Apples are actually my favorite fruit. Have you ever eaten the seeds before because I have. I did it on purpose because my dad said it will grow an apple tree in my stomach. Which I think would be really cool because then I could eat apples all the time. Except it might be hard to get the apple out of my stomach and then eat it. But maybe if it's already on there I can taste it and won't have to take it out." I put the apple in his hand he was holding his stomach looking down at it he hadn't noticed he was rambling. I took one of his hands off his stomach to put the apple in it. "Thanks Mina." I laughed at him. "Uh huh." I took big bites of my apple until it was gone. Bjoo was done before me because he was an "Apple eating machine" which I observed was true.
When my mom got home Byungjoo and I were still playing around in the house. She called for us and asked if bjoo wanted to stay for dinner. "No thanks Mrs. Kim I should probably go home now thank you. Bye Mina see you tomorrow." "Yep you will." We smiled and waved at each other as he left my home. I went to my room and got my barely even homework and brought it back out to the bar. I finished it when mom finished dinner. We did our normal routine of eating, cleaning up, watching tv, me falling asleep a little bit and her taking me to the bathroom to brush my teeth then me climbing into bed to have wonderful dreams. "I will definitely see you tomorrow." I whispered to myself and drifted off to sleep.
