"I have seen the best of you, and the worst of you, and I choose both."
― Sarah Kay
Leo's POV:
I stared down at Alexa's sleeping form. Her dark hair flowed behind her, exposing her pale neck to the haunting moonlight. My wolf was strangely silent in my mind, not communicating at all, just watching the scene in front of him.
This wasn't real. How could this be real?
I had gone on plenty of missions before, each one filled with monsters more terrible than the last but this...this was on a whole other playing field that I didn't know the rules of.
I wasn't stupid; I knew my orders and I knew what was at stake if I failed. Jagged scars mapped around my body were a daily reminder of where my loyalties lie and I was in no position to change that.
Thanks to my enhanced vision, I could still pick out the shadows under her eyes in the darkness which seemed to have lightened since I first met her. Sighing, I gently picked up her sleeping body and placed her back carefully onto the bed.
It wasn't exactly that I had lied to Alexa about why I was with her. It was a coincidence bumping into her at that party but I had I admit I was checking out that area for anyone who knew her.
Scorpio had warned me of the dangers in tangling with this mission but I couldn't refuse the proposition. Ever since I saw her ghostly image flash up on my screen, my wolf and I knew we had to find her. It was like this invisible force wouldn't stop prodding me until I set eyes on her.
And when I did...it was as if heaven and hell had opened up on earth at the same time, leaving me as a helpless victim of fate.
Alexa stirred and rolled over; her small hands grasping the duvet covered and pulling them up to cover her neck. Deep down, I suspected her subconscious recognised when a predator was near and I couldn't help but a wry smile at her actions of covering her most vulnerable point.
I never imagined the Atlas Pack could have been after someone as insignificant as her though, something that only raised more questions than answers.
The Atlas Pack....
Memories assaulted my mind. They robbed me of my breath, my soul, my spirit like a curse I could never escape. Blackness swarmed my vision as my wolf snapped at me to let him take over.
No, I can't lose control not here, not now.
I stumbled over to the wall and leant my back against it. Feel your breath leaving your body...feel your heart beat under your skin...Scorpio's words flooded back to me and I gradually felt my wolf recede back in my mind.
I couldn't be that careless again. If Alexa saw me she probably would have run away and never looked back. Who knows what kind of person would pick her up then?
I still couldn't forget the look Alexa gave me when she saw my wolf for the first time. Nothing but pure horror in her striking blue eyes. I couldn't blame her. She might as well have slapped me around the face but this was the world we lived in.
She seemed to have accepted me as a man but in my other form, I might as well have been a covered in blood and standing over a fresh kill.
And I had to accept that.
I pushed off the wall and snagged my phone out of my hoodie, quickly slipping out of the room and onto the dark balcony. It wasn't like I was going to get to sleep tonight again so I might as well make use of this time and contact Eleanor. She answered with her usual tardiness on the last ring.
