C H A P T E R 5

Aspen Montgomery

Let's say I have been on the road for around ten-fourteen hours now. I haven't slept a wink yet, and I'm exhausted. I take a right turn that leads me off the highway for a quick stop, or what I hoped was a quick stop. I park my Jeep, grab my phone, keys, and open my Jeep door. I step out, close my door and lock my car. I begin walking into the Starbucks I just parked at. I brought pretty much my life savings with me so I'll have money like any other day. I open the doors to the cafe and step in. There are around ten other people standing in front of me, I sigh and stand there waiting for my turn. I take my phone out of my back pocket and see I had a missed call.

1 missed call from Bro💙

'Oh my lord' I exhale and put my phone against my ear to listen to the message.

"Aspen. Sis. Where are you? Please call me back and tell me your safe. Why would you leave while I was out? Please come back. I love you."

'Should I call him? Risk the chance he would tel-'

"Miss what would you like?" A young guy with brown hair asks me.
"Oh uh a venti caramel macchiato please"
"Alright, name?" He asks as he grabs a cup and marker.
"Aspen"
"Beautiful name" he says with a wink "5.60"

I grab the cash from my back pocket and hand it to him. He takes it and places it in the cash register. He looks up at me and smiles. I move to the checkout area and stand there for my drink.

"There you go Miss Aspen!" He says sweetly.
"Thank you" I reply while my cheeks turn a pink color. He smiles at my reply and I walk over to a little table near a window and sit down. I take small sips of my coffee as I gaze out the big window looking around the town I stopped in. I look down at my phone with my thumb hovering over my brothers contact name debating whether or not to call him.

"Hi um-" I hear a voice which startles me slightly.
"Oh my I'm sorry for scaring you" the guy who took my order apologized.
"No no it's okay. Hi" I say back shyly.
"Now what is a pretty lady like you, doing here all by herself?" He asks.
"Just uh getting away for a bit" I say a little skeptical.
"Hmm. Jason by the way" he says as he reaches for a hand shake. I shake his hand and take another sip of my coffee.
"Shouldn't you be working? Not to be rude"
"My first shift just ended. And I thought why not come over here to this pretty lady and have a chat" he explains with an amazing smile.
"Well then" I say with a slight giggle.
"Where are you from, Aspen?"
"Um California"
"California huh, how come your here in Arizona?"
"Long story" hoping he would ask about it because I think I need someone to vent to.
"I've got time" he said with a chuckle.
"You sure?" He nods his head "well here I go"

"So Shawn and Drew basically never talked when Shawn came over. It got very awkward at points..."

|Freshman Year|

"Please be nice okay?" I ask Drew, basically begging him.
"Fine" he says.
"Good" I say and I hear a groan come from Drew.

I hear the front door open and see Shawn appear.

"Hey Shawn" I say happily.
"Hey Aspen uh Drew" he acknowledges.
"Hi Shawn" Drew says through gritted teeth.
"We'll be on our way to my room" I say to brake the tension.
"Okay" Drew responds.

"I want to kill him sometimes" I say with a sigh.
"Hey it'll be okay"

|Present|

"Well, don't you just have an amazing past" Jason jokes.
"I guess so" I say sarcastically.
Jason chuckles and we chat for a bit longer. I notice I finished my coffee and look at my phone to see what time it was.

9:47am

I lock my phone and face Jason.
"It was really nice to talk to you" I comment.
"My pleasure. Are you heading out?" He asks.
"Yeah. I think it's best if I get a move on, I mean I am driving to New York City" I explain to him.
"NYC? Wow" he adds.
"Yeah pretty far" I state.
"If you don't mind, can I have your number?" He asks nervously.
"Uh yeah it's ---/---/----"
"Thank you. It's just I would really like to talk to you again" he says with his amazing smile.
"Me too" I reply with a smile as well and we say out goodbyes.
"Talk to you soon?" I say.
"Of course"

I slightly hug him and exit the Starbucks. I walk to my car and feel a buzz coming from my back pocket. I take it out and see it's an unknown number.

Unknown: hey it's Jason
To Jay😆: hey. Im about to get on the road.
From Jay😆: have a safe drive text me soon!

I smile down at my phone and soon realize I should really call my brother back. I dial his number in and soon begin to hear the rings.

"Aspen! Omg sis where are you? Shawns been calling and texting me saying you are gone and an-"
"Drew calm down. You have to promise me that you won't tell Shawn any of this or I will not tell you anything more"
"I promise just tell me where you are"
"Arizona"
"Aspen! What the heck?! Why?"
"I'm driving to NYC okay Drew? It's part of a plan that I made. I'll be safe. I'll call and text you okay?"
"Please Aspen com-"
"Drew I can't. When I get to NYC I might tell you why but for now please just support me right now"
"I love you sis be careful"
"I love you too"

I guess you can say that is how I met a stranger, well someone who is very close to me now. Don't worry hun, Shawn drama is coming soon but, why don't we take it down a notch for now huh, sound like a plan?
