I still didn't sleep well last night. Even though she was stuck lying on the table in the room of my almost murder, I was still jumpy and full of worry that she was standing write above me with the knife - that is now embedded in the table via her clothing and skin - pointed at my chest, being driven down and through to my fast beating heart.
Groggily, I stand up from my lying position when my head spins and black spots come up which puts me back in a sitting position, rubbing my temples with my eyes closed. Ugh, school. It’s a teenager’s living hell. I stand up again, and this time with more success without almost blacking out, and shuffle over to the door. I open the door slightly and poke my head around. She’s gone. My heart starts to race and I fling the door open. The knife wasn’t standing up from the table; there was only a pool of blood and a piece of fabric. Her fabric. I turned around and ran up the stairs. My family was sitting at the round wooden breakfast table. They all looked up at me with not caring faces (the usual glances I get) and then avert their eyes back to their food. Mum held her gaze, an evil smile playing on her lips. “What’s the matter, Ivy? You look like you just saw a ghost.” Her grin widens.
“No,” I said like it was a fact. “I just witnessed quite a nerve-racking scene last night. Just a little shaken up. But it was nothing; just a nightmare.” I say, keeping my eyes hard and on her eyes. Turning around and walking back towards the door, I feel her eyes burning through the fabric and branding my back with her evil eyes. Back in my room, I get changed into my uniform that was hanging on the hook in the corner of my room.
Tying my shoes, a yell of impatience comes from upstairs. “Hurry up, Ivy!”
“I’m coming! Don’t get your panties in a twist!” I shout back. I could mentally see him flipping me off at that.
Back in my basement, I change into my uniform and today, with the shoes. My new school bag, one designed for the school, sits in the corner of the room. It looks packed and ready for tomorrow. Hoisting it over my shoulder and placing it securely resting on my back, the weight of it tells me it is packed. I trudge up the stairs and back into the kitchen where only my mother sits.
“Where are the boys?” I say, my voice wavering even though I tried very hard to make it sound strong. “Oh, your father left for his new job and I sent Lachlan to go to the bus stop already.” I nodded, suddenly really scared.
“Why did you send him down with out me?”
“Because I wanted to walk you down to the bus stop and talk to you about events of the previous night.” My heart started pounding and my palms started to become quite sticky. “Uh… Okay.” Say, my voice stuttering and this time, it was quite obvious. I turn to the door and start to walk ahead but her voice stops me. “Aren’t you going to eat breakfast?”
“I don’t really feel hungry right now and besides, if I do eat breakfast, I will miss my bus.”
“But breakfast is the most important time of the day-“
“I don’t care if breakfast is Jesus and we must eat it, but I’m not eating breakfast today. Got it?” She nodded, giving up. But I know she just wants me on her good side so she can ‘talk’. Please, more like try to murder me again. “Let’s go then.” She pushed herself up from the table, with only her left arm, I noticed. “Is your arm okay?” I ask in a mocking voice. This really hit her.
“OKAY you know what, you little brat, this wouldn’t be happening if you had just gone to sleep in the stretcher like you were supposed to so why don’t you just keep your stupid mouth shut and I will talk about what happened last night and why you mustn’t mention it to anyone. Especially not Lachlan or Joseph. Understand?” I nodded quickly. Okay, so making that unnecessary comment was really what it was. Unnecessary.
