I run.
Faster than I have ever run before.
Pushing past people at a full sprint isn’t easy. Imagine you’re me; groups of teenagers and children are staring at you wondering why you would want to run through a Safe House and out the doors with a pillowcase full of clothing. Safe House. It always sounded to good to be true. I thought I was saved, free from harm. I was wrong.
Cody was nowhere to be seen, thank God. I couldn’t handle saying goodbye. He would try to make me stay, or he would come with me. I just need to get out of BridgePoint, Kalaka, and Kapeton. I just need to leave. My torso screams with pain but I ignore it, trying to get away from all these betraying, abusive, clueless people. I still can’t get my head around the fact that Jack stabbed Cody in the back. He doesn’t know, hopefully. I don’t what I would do if he was physically hurt.
I run around the corner, past a dozen houses, and stop at the top of the hill. I cough, spluttering blood. Tears form in my eyes, and I soon find myself crouched down and crying at the grass. No, Ivy, get up! No one can see you or you’ll be taken. You have to run! I breathe in, and then out, standing back up and slinging the pillow case back over my shoulder. I wince at the pain in my torso, leg and arm. The muscles in my leg, contracting as I run, doesn’t help the pain either. Run! I keep going, slower down the hill and then picking the speed back up as I reach the bottom. I know where I am, I just have to keep going.
I turn more corners, around more bends and through a bush before I get there. The park down the road from my house is as normal as always. Swing-set, slide and a bench where parents sit to watch their kids, or where the older kids hang-out. I keep running, through the grass-path and over the field until I get to the other side. I slow until I’m only walking and I gaze at the open field, at the trees behind me and finally back at the secret park. Our spot. More tears brim at my eyes. I won’t be there tomorrow or when he gets back from his music lesson, he wouldn’t know what hit him. I drop my pillow case and sit down. “Damn it.” I mutter as I realize I had left anything to keep me warm tonight. I had only brought spare clothing, some packaged food and two water bottles that I can fill up. I huff out a long breath of air and hunch my back. I’m going to have to keep running, but I’ll stay here tonight.
*Cody’s P.O.V*
“Thanks, man.” I acknowledge Cameron, my music teacher.
“Anytime, Codes.” He turns and leaves me, maybe to teach another student. I pick up my guitar and place it carefully in my case and buckling it shut before picking it up and striding towards the double doors. Once I’m inside, everyone is speaking quietly, obviously gossiping. As I walk through the crowd, I catch words, some repeated.
“Ivy…”
“Yeah, the new kid…”
“Runaway…”
“Blood on her sh…”
“Ivy…”
Surely it’s a different Ivy, right?”
