Earth 1988
Hospital: Hallway 🌹

A young kid named Peter Quill sits in the waiting room of a hospital, listening to a 'Awesome Mix Vol. 1' tape on his Walkman with his best friend since forever, Rosemary Martin, she sits next to him in a chair, writing in a notebook.

Peter's grandfather walks out of a hospital room and walks over to Peter, kneeling down in front of him, "Peter. Your momma wants to speak with you."

Rosemary looks up at Peter, seeing that he's not listening and she looks at his grandfather and tells him softly, "He can't hear you." Peter's grandfather looks at her, she points her pencil to her ear and says to him, "The music is too loud."

Peter's grandpa nods at Rosemary and he looks down at the Walkman in Peter's lap, "Come on, Pete." He takes the headphones off of Peter's head, "Take these fool things off." He turns off the Walkman and gives it back to Peter, patting his leg softly after a moment, he shares a sad look with Rosemary before they both look back at Peter.

A couple of minutes later, Peter standing and putting on his backpack, walking forward as he holds his headphones and Walkman until his grandfather gently takes the headphones and Walkman, he puts them inside his backpack for him.

Peter slowly walks towards the room, he looks back at Rosemary and she gives him a small sympathetic smile, telling him, "I'll be right here." Peter nods and continues to walk forward into the hospital room.

Hospital Room

Peter's grandfather walks behind Peter, guiding him inside towards a group of people who are sitting and standing beside a bed where Peter's mother—Meredith Quill, lays dying in bed from brain cancer.

Peter's grandfather leads Peter to Meredith's left bedside, Peter looks at his mom with a small smile, her breathing shallow, she looks at Peter and notices his left eye is bruised, she asks him as she has an accent, "Why have you been fighting with the other boys again, baby?" Peter looks down, silently shrugs his shoulders, she motherly persists, "Peter?"

Young Peter explains, "They killed a little frog that ain't done nothin'. Smushed it with a stick."

Meredith looks at Peter with love in her eyes, "You're so like your daddy." Peter looks at her, "You even look like him. And he was an angel. Composed of pure light..." Meredith's eyes close for a moment, almost out of breath.

Peter's grandpa, Meredith's father, softly calls out from behind Peter as he holds his shoulders, "Mer? You got a present there for Peter, don't you?"

Meredith nods a bit weakly "Of course." She softly touches the small wrapped present and card, she's to weak to give it to Peter, "There."

Meredith's father, Peter's grandfather takes the present and card, saying softly to Peter, "I've got you covered, Pete." He puts the present and card in Peter's backpack.

Meredith tells Peter, "You open it up when I'm gone, okay?" Peter looks away as his eyes start well up with tears, "Your grandpa..." Peter sniffles, "...is gonna take such good care of you." Her father looks down at his daughter sadly, "At least until your daddy comes back to get you." Her breathing starts to become more shallow, "Take my hand." She weakly opens her hand to Peter but he turns his head away, "Peter." Peter begins to cry as he backs away into his grandfather.

Peter's grandpa looks at Peter, "Pete, come on."

Meredith tells Peter, "Take my hand." Just then, Meredith's heart stops and she slowly drops her hands down to the bed.

Young Peter looks at Meredith, hearing the heart monitor beep, flatlining, "Mom? No! No! No! No!" He goes to reach for his mom but his grandfather starts to pull him away.

Hallway 🌹

Rosemary quickly looks up as she hears Peter's desperate cries, "Mom! No!" A doctor rushes into the hospital room as Peter's grandfather carries Peter out of the room.

Peter's grandpa tells Peter, "Come with me." Rosemary quickly shoves her notebook and pencil in her backpack.

Young Quill continues to scream, "No! No!" His grandfather puts Peter down as Rosemary stands up and puts on her backpack.

Peter's grandpa bends down in front of Peter and tells him pleadingly, "You've got to stay here. Please."

Young Quill crying, "No..."

Peter's grandpa looks at Rosemary sadly and she understands that now, Peter's mom has died and looks at them both sadly. Peter's grandfather slowly backs away, "Okay?"

(Slow Motion) Peter watches his grandfather turn around and walk back into the hospital room where everyone is crying at the loss.

Moments later, Peter runs down the hallway with Rosemary following as she calls out his name, "Peter!"

Outside 🌹

Young Peter push opens the door and runs outside with Rosemary following him, "Peter!"

Young Peter runs up a small hill and suddenly falls to his knees as he weeps, "No." Rosemary runs up to him and drops to her knees beside him on his left, she wraps her arms around him for comfort and he holds on her tightly, afraid that she will disappear as well.

Peter continues to cry on Rosemary's shoulder when suddenly, a light turns on and hits down on them from above, the two look up to see a spaceship above them.

Suddenly, a colourful beam shoots down and it starts to swirl around them, Peter shouts, "Mom!" The two disappear.
