CHAPTER 2

The sky is staring to lose it's blue shade as the sun sets. I have been sitting in the same chair all day waiting for Angelica's letter. I look at the clock, it says that it's 7:00 pm. I decide to go make dinner for me and Phillip. I then hear the doorbell ring as I'm in the kitchen. I go to get the door and see a familiar face. My face lights up as I hug my sister tightly.
"Angelica!" I shout squeezing her tightly. Oh how I've missed her embrace...her smile...her rose perfume....
"Oh Eliza!" She says letting go of the hug. I look her in the eyes and see that he hasn't changed a bit. Her eyes are still large and lively, her lips a perfectly plump line. She didn't age at all. She was gorgeous as always. Her eyes welled up with tears, as did mine. I let her inside to set her bags down near the front door. I hear the stairs creak again and I see Alexander come down the stairs. I see the same smile I saw at the ball. His eyes squinted, dimples appear on his cheeks, and his teeth sparkle even in the low light. "Angelica!" He says happily. He comes down the stairs and hugs her tightly. I was always a bit envious of my sister because she had a way of connecting with people in a way I couldn't. I felt as if Angelica had lit a flame in him before I even got to know him. Alexander let go of the embrace and kept his hands on her shoulders. He smiles at her once more and then says: "How are you?"
"Pretty good and you?"
"Um..." He looks at me, catching my eye. "Pretty good as well." He says looking back at Angelica.
"That's good to hear. What are you doing in New York?"
"I just wanted to spend time with my sister. I've missed her." She pulls me next to her and then put her arms around me. I smile at this avoiding eye contact with Alexander, even though I feel his eyes on me.
"Oh well that's nice, I'll leave you two then" He heads upstairs and we both hear the distant sound of his door closing. I go sit on the couch first, Angelica sits next to me. I place my hands in my lap, crossing them together.
"What'a going on between you two?" She asks quietly.
"Me and Alexander?" She nods. "I saw him walking outside one night, except....he wasn't just taking a walk he was walking somewhere." I pause. "As if he was walking to meet someone."
"What are you saying?" She asks confused.
"I don't know I-" I sigh. "I feel as if he's been doing something without telling me. I don't want to think he's doing something bad-"
"But you feel like he is." She says finishing my sentence. I nod in agreement. We sit in silence for a moment. Angelica speaks up:
"So what do you want to do?"
"I don't know." I sigh. "This probably isn't a good place to be talking about this. I know that if he hears us, he will infuriated with me and we're already in a rough patch."
"Okay, well lets go outside and take a walk." I nod and follow Angelica out the door. We quietly shut the door behind us, and began walking down the street. It was windy that night, but the warmth in the air helped keep us from shivering.
"I hate to ask this..." Angelica started, breaking the silence. "But do you think he's...being unfaithful?"
Those words hit me for a second. Maybe that's what I was thinking all along but I couldn't admit it to myself.
"I don't want to think that....but maybe...I just didn't want to admit it to myself or think that the man I love so much isn't being honest with me." The thought of Alexander sneaking around with another woman behind my back hurt me to the core. I love him so much, and to think that my love for him didn't mean anything or a lot to him made my stomach drop.
"Well let's find out."
"What?!"
"Let's find out." She repeated once more.
"You mean, be sneaky?"
"Yeah, if he's being sneaky, you have every right to do so too."
"But that doesn't make it right!" I say trying to scold my sisters outgoing personality.
"Eliza..." She puts her hands on my shoulders. "You want to know what he's doing, right?"
"Yes but-"
"Then let's find out. Let's go undercover and see if he's doing anything bad."
"Angelica, you know that's not right. Invading someone's privacy-"
"You're his wife! You deserve to know whether this is worth worrying about or not." I look away from her trying to figure out what to do. She's right, I am his wife and I deserve to know. But I would feel like I'm violating someone's personal space by doing this. But at the same time I deserve closure.
"Okay." Angelica's face lights up a little bit too excitedly.
"You're too excited about this." I say laughing at the end.
"I want to help you find out if he's not being faithful. I know it's bad to invade, but he would probably do the same thing." I nod and sigh.
"So, do you know if there's a pattern of him not being home?"
"Yes, it's every Thursday and Saturday."
"Okay, well tomorrow's Thursday so we can execute our plan then. But we have lots to discuss."
"Well we can't talk about our plan in the house, where are we going to go?"
"C'mon," She grabs my hand. "I'll show you."
