"So, Alex, what was Jace doing so I can take over what he was doing?" Ryder says as we watch Jace drive away down the dusty dirt road we live on.

"Well, first, you can put up Witch, then you need to weed my mom's garden, then meet me in the barn to see what needs to be done then," I say all in one breath, eager to get the chores done, so we could do other stuff the rest of the day.

"Ok!" I hear Ryder call over his shoulder as he walks into mom's garden.

I walk into the house to do the dishes and straighten up in the house. Then, I see Ryder take off his shirt, because he is baking in the hot Nevada sun shine

"God, he is so hot," I think to myself as I watch him through the window as I am doing the dishes.

When I am finished, I walk out onto the dusty path to the barn. I turn to look in the corral to check on Knight. I walk up to him and say, "Hey, baby boy, how are you doing?" I look away from Knight and walk into the barn to turn out the horses to the pretty green fields.

"Come out, Santana. Ace, move it," I say to the two best friends as I am leading them to the field. They go in, and I hear hoof beats, so I turn to look behind me and I see Ryder leading Lulu and Lucy over to where I am. I put my two horses in the field and go back to get two more horses. Ryder and I do this until there is only an empty barn left.

Ryder looks at me and asks "What do we do now?"

"Well, we need to muck out their stalls." I hand Ryder a pitchfork and give him a wheelbarrow and flick on the radio. We get into a rhythm while mucking out the stalls.

Soon, we are done with all the chores, so we ride out with the ranch hands, Mikey, Ross, and Alec, to check on the cattle, which are out on the summer land grazing.

When we have checked on the cattle and their calves, we ride back to the ranch. The ranch hands ride out to ride the fence lines and check on the fences with Hulk and Della with them. Mikey is riding Blues. Ross is riding River and Alec is riding Whiskey.

"You want to ride out to Eagle Flat?" Ryder asked me.

"Sure, let me tack up Santana!" I reply quickly, excited with the thought of going on a ride with Ryder. "And you can borrow Ace or Lulu if Ash is tired from the run over here," I say.

Ryder comes out of the barn a few minutes later leading fully brushed and tacked up Ace and Santana. "Hey, you did not have to tack up Santana. You know, I could have gotten her myself, but thank you for doing it for me," I say to Ryder.

Ryder looks over at me with those clear blue eyes, but quickly looks away from me and clicks Ace to a walk on the path to the Eagle Flat. "How do you deal with your parents being gone so much?" He asked me.

"Well, I have Jace, Mikey, Ross, and Alec. Ross and Alec are like my brothers, and Mikey's like my second dad, and I have close friends, so there are a lot of people there for me when I need them to be there for me."

Ryder looks over and smiles and brings Ace closer and gives me a hug, but Santana shies away from Ace and Ryder and I end up on the ground with Ryder laughing his ass off while I'm still on the ground.

"I am still down here, Ryder," I say to him. That seems to snap him out of laughing at me, so he lopes Ace over to Santana and leans down and snags her reigns and when they come back, I get back up on Santana

"Hey, are you ok? You hit your butt pretty hard on the ground," he says with a smirk on his face

"Yeah, I am fine, thanks for asking," I snap, as I look at him with a glare. "Race ya!" I shout as I kick Santana into a fast, but steady gallop

"Hey, no fair, you cheated!" I hear him shout from behind me.

"No, you're just slow!" I say to him as I start to pull Santana up, because we have reached the watering hole. I let Santana have her head to get a drink of water out of the watering hole. She takes a long slow sip of the cool water.

"We should head back to the ranch before they send out a search party," Ryder says as he looks at his watch.

"Yeah, I guess we should get going," I say as I turn Santana back towards the ranch.

"Race for real, a fair one," Ryder says, and I accept his challenge.

"Ready...set...go!" I say as Santana shoots forward, ahead of Ace and Ryder. We race all the way back to the ranch and I won, but Ryder was close on my tail the whole time.

"Good race," Ryder says to me as we are brushing our sweaty tired horses after the long ride in the summer heat.

"Hey, you want to watch me train Knight?" I ask him, so he does not have to sit in the house and be bored while I am working with Knight. He nods eagerly.

"Whose horse is he?" He asks as he sees Knight.

"Well, I actually bought him to train and sell, but I might just keep him. I want to see how he turns out. I already have him halter broke and to the point where he really trust me, so today, I want to get on his back." I slip into Knight's corral. He walks up to me when he notices I am in his pen and blows his breath in my face. "Ryder, hand me the snaffle bit covered in honey that's with the saddle over there." I gesture in the general direction.

When he hands it to me, I show the bit to Knight, who gladly takes the bit in his mouth to suck it clean of the honey. I slip the soft leather over his velvety ears. They flick back and forth as to get rid of a fly while I buckle the chin strap under his chin and snap a lunge line on one of the rings of the bit. I flick the end of the lunge line at his rear end and he sets off at a working trot. I flick it again and he stars to lope.

"Whoa, boy," I say in a calming manner to get him to stop. "Ryder, hand me that saddle over there and hand me the blanket and set the saddle by my feet," I say to him never taking my eyes or my hand off Knight's face when I was talking to him.

Once Ryder has done as I asked, I grab the saddle blanket and I let Knight sniff it to let him know that it will not hurt him. I rub his neck with it and his withers as I ease it over his back. I let him get used to the feel of that on his back as I turn around and grab the saddle from my feet. I carefully let him sniff the leather of the worn out saddle I use for training the colts. I slowly tighten his girth to let him get used to the weight of something on his back I flick the lunge line at his rear end and send him into a steady trot. I flick it again at his rear end and send him into a collected lope then a fast gallop.

"Whoa, boy," I say in a calming manner to get him to stop again. I walk up to Knight and unclip the lunge from his bridle. I slowly put my foot in the stirrup of the saddle and put my weight on it. I slowly add more weight as I swing my leg farther over his back till I am fully sitting on him with my foot in the stirrup. I nudge him into a walk.

After we do that for a couple of circlets, I nudge him into a trot, where he bucks and hops and kicks two legs in the air. When he finally settles down, I decide that is enough for today and we will do it again tomorrow.
