Chapter  1:

Juliette POV

“Juliette… wake up” I just moan my disagreement “wake up” the voice gets closer but the person gets further “Brad Pitt, don’t go… Angelina wont know” I manage to mumble to a now disappearing Brad Pitt. “Juliette! Get up!” I now clearly hear Leslies voice, open my eyes just a little bit but shut them again. “urgh!” I hear her thumping away down the hall and sigh in relief, finally. Now, back to sleep- “aahhhh!!” I shout as I feel the ice cold water drip down my hair and onto my skin. I frantically wipe my eyes and look into the now smirking face of Leslie, standing with an empty glass. I glare, hoping to kill her silently with my death stare, but she just holds her stomach and laugh “that doesn’t work on me” she makes her way out the room and into the hallway “common sleepy, you’ll be late for work” I groan falling back on the bed, laughing off what had just happened and picturing how I looked with my bed hair and wet, angry face. I drag myself out of bed and make my way to the bathroom to get ready for the day ahead.

Walking into the kitchen, ready for work I smell bacon “ohhh… food!” I grab a plate and start dishing when Leslie walks into the kitchen. She sees me with my face stuffed with bacon and eggs, rolls her eyes and starts laughing “such a lady” I swallow and answer her back with the usual answer “you love this lady, she’s your best friend” we both burst into a fit of laughter until I look at the clock on the wall and realize that if I don’t get moving soon, I’ll be late for work. I get up from the table, grab my bag and dash for the door “bye Les! See you at 1 for lunch!” she waves goodbye “see you then!”.   I climb into my car and put the radio on full blast as I hear my favourite song, Piano by Ariana Grande and sing with until I reach the parking area of the Songbird Diner, given the name as there are always live bands and karaoke evenings and such. That reminds her, she’ll have to talk to Caron, the owner and tell her that Leslie and her band volunteered to play on Saturday night. She sees Josh, her other best friend who would rather snog your boyfriend than you and my therapist. The moment she parks her car and walks into the diner she laughs at the sight of Josh with earphones, probably listening to Lady Gaga, shaking his ass more then actually cleaning tables. I quietly sneak up behind and count to three 1….2…3 I tickle him and he jumps up ready to use the cloth as a weapon. He pulls his face dramatically and puts his hand over his heart “omg love! You almost killed a legend” he puts his hand on his forehead and fakes death “drama queen” I laugh at him while walking to Caron’s office to tell her the great news.

I enter Caron’s office and she is speaking to someone on the phone, she holds up her finger as to indicate one minute and I walk over  to the couch and sit down. When she hangs up, she has a worried look on her face, but Caron being Caron, she slowly replaced it with a smile , walked over sat down next to me and embraced me in a tight hug “Morning darling!” “Morning Caron” we let each other go and I see the worried look come back “why the face Caron?” I ask as she gets up to make her a cup of coffee “well… the band we hired for Saturday night just cancelled” and she silently sang hallelujah in her head. “and now we have no one, nada, zilch!” she buries her face in her hands “well…. I sorta, kinda have a solution…” she lifts her head and smiles at me “ are you finally going to use that talent of yours?!” she exclaims excitedly. “no… Les and her band volunteered for Saturday night, if you would accept them?”  she sees so much bliss on Carons face that she thought the woman would bounce of the walls any second. “of course! Having a well-known band will provide us with good publicity as well. You’ll have to thank her for me if I don’t see her today” Caron looks at her watch and quickly looks at Juliette again “ Lets get going, its almost the breakfast rush” and with that, she and Caron set off to serve breakfast.

As the morning continues, she serves the costumers, regular and new, and by 12:30, she collapses in one of the booths waiting for Leslie. When she sees her friend she greets her and they sit in the booth while Caron brings them coffee. Caron hugs Leslie and thanks her “no problem aunt Caron, anything for you” and with a big smile she walks away. I would do anything for Caron, especially after she took me in and gave me a job when I was broken after my mothers funeral and she let Leslie play in the diner a couple times as well, so in a way she has been both our moms and advice giver. Not as if I needed the advice anyway, as I haven’t been involved with guys but Leslie on the other hand is stuck in an on-off relationship with the keyboard player of their band, Kej. His a really nice guy but his a bit of a Casanova, but he has a deep connection with Leslie and would always choose her over any other girl.

As I take a sip of my coffee, I see Les looking at me with a worried expression on her face “what? Do I have something on my face?” I ask, instinctively rubbing on my face, she stops my hand and shrugs “no, its just that you look tired, like you haven’t been getting much sleep lately” I immediately get annoyed as I think of what has been driving me insane and keeping me awake all this time “well… I think we either have a very happy couple living in our building, or someone who keeps hammering the walls for some reason” she takes another sip, wanting to change the subject to something that won’t raise my sugar levels this early in the morning. “well… I don’t hear anything, but its probably because you’ve got sensitive ears. I could still remember when you would hear if a chord change was wrong or if someones guitar was out. Your ears are still good” she looks down at her cup knowing this is a sensitive topic for me. “They still ask for you to come back, you know” she takes a sip of her coffee while looking at me over the rim.

‘They’ being the band. Yes, they are still together, just with two or so newer members, and they made quite a name for themselves after opening for Nimmy Jevis, but after that night I withdrew from the band and told the guys that I needed time, especially as it was my mothers funeral a week after that concert. It’s been four years since then and they have gotten new bass player, but they would still ask me on the odd occasion where I would politely decline. I cant pick up an instrument without thinking about that night, specifically my bass, but I would still listen to my Jaco Prestorius and my Beethoven with that familiar sting and heartache that comes with each passing note.

I would still see the band here and there, but they were very busy with gigs and concerts. Saturday night will be one of the few times where I could actually catch up on everyones lives and get to know whats happening as they are all very successful musicians. I still play one instrument though, my cello. I would teach on Sundays at the community centre and teach the kids to play and a bit of theory. I have to put my music degree, which I did decide to complete, to good use somehow.

I turn my attention back to Leslie, who is now ranting about how Kej was checking some girl out at a concert and I just shook my head. Ah… love birds. I decide to distract her as I can see she is close to breaking down “so, how’s it going with the band?” I ask and suddenly her face lights up. “Its wonderful! And we’re so busy and oh, I didn’t even tell you the best part” I look at her as if to indicate that she continue “we found a new replacement for Kenny” Kenny was the drummer, but his wife fell pregnant with their third child and he decided to call the band quits. “is he any good?” I ask, genuinely interested as I know Leslie is very picky when it comes to drummers and Kenny was one of the best “oh… you’ll see on Saturday, but all I can say is… prepare to get blown away. Oh, and its not just his playing that’s good” she winks at me and I punch her arm playfully while we both giggle knowing exactly what she was implying…
