Ode Of The Mermaid

A woman torn in half, between love and duty frayed

Between her husband and lover she swayed,

Half woman, half creature of the sea,

She couldn’t choose, neither could she be

Her love for the sailor strong stayed

But how could she forgive him? How could she betray

The God of the sea?

“Poseidon s my life, but so is he!”

She called him beneath the mocking sky

He never even questioned her why

His love for her was so strong

He, the Ship’s Adonis, and to the sea she belonged

To keep her fortitude, from going astray,

She turns her brimming gaze away,

She grasped the broken bottles glass,

And cut the rope alas!

And she will always bear the brunt,

Of loving two and then loving none.

For as a wife though she stayed true,

She spilled her lover’s blood through.

And when at last he did speak,

He asked her why she kept their love at stake

And she replied with frosty eyes

I’m sorry, my darling, but I am Poseidon’s wife!
