 dan P.O.V

I looked at her in shock. "You're...kidding. You have to be." I said quietly. She shook her head. I turned around and ran toward the car.
"Dan, where are you going?" She yelled. I turned around one last time before getting into the car. "Far away from here." I said, opening the door. I got in the car, Phil eyeing me suspiciously.

"What exactly was that?" He asked. I shrugged, looking down. "A lot." I said quietly, pressing the "Engine Start" button adjacent to the steering wheel. Phil put his hand on my shoulder and gave me an encouraging smile. I smiled back.

"As it turns out," I said as we pulled up in the parking lot of McDonalds. "My sister isn't my sister. She's my cousin." Phil looked at me, confused.
"What do you mean?" He asked as we sat down at a booth. "I'll tell you once we get our food. It's a long ass story." I said, feeling my phone vibrate in my pocket. I ignored it, knowing it was my mom. The last person I'd want to talk to right now.

We got our food, and I began the story. "I was four years old." I said stirring my drink with my straw. "My mum found out she couldn't have children anymore, so I guess my dad....just left." I said, shrugging.

"My mum told me that he died, I guess she didn't want to deal with having to explain everything to me." I said, taking a chicken nugget out of the box. Phil swallowed the bite of food he had in his mouth.

"If your mom couldn't have children, then your sister, was she...adopted, or what?" He asked, taking a sip of his drink. "Surrogate mother - my aunt Abi." He looked confused.

"My aunt had Stella for my mom. She's not technically my sister, she's my cousin." "So you're an only child?" I nodded.
"Unless my dad went on, remarried, and had another ki-" My phone rang. I sighed, answering it. It was my mum.

"Daniel, where are you? Your sister cal-"
"Cut the crap, mum!" I said into the phone angrily. "Stella already told me the truth. We're not siblings, so stop acting like we are."
      Silence.
My mom finally spoke. "Dan, please. I'm sorry. I can fix this, just come back." Her voice was soft an empathetic, a side of my mum I didn't see very much.

"Mum, there is no way you can fix this. All the Fathers Day's I have spent crying because I thought my dad was dead, all the missed opportunities because you decided to lie to me instead of telling me the truth, the simple truth. Unless you can take that back, unless you can make up for the 17 years without my father - my only father - I will not forgive you.

I hung up the phone, not waiting for a reply from my mom. I held back tears as Phil looked at me in a stunned silence. I shook my head, taking a sip of my drink and wiping away a stray tear as quickly as possible.

"Dan.." He said, shaking his head. "It's okay. It'll be okay, I promise." He smiled at me. I tried to return the smile, but failed. Instead, I just looked at him. There were a thousand thoughts running through my head, but at that moment I realized that Phil was all I had. We had known each other for such a little time, yet we had grown so close.

"Phil?" I said, a smile taking over my face. He looked up from his phone. "I love you." I said. He looked at me wide eyed. "I love you, Philip Michael Lester." I said again. He seemed confused. I laughed quietly and took out my phone."

"Stop it, Dan." He said. "Stop messing with my feelings, please." I was confused. Messing with his feelings?
"What do you mean?" I said, giving him a puzzled look. I noticed his eyes were glossy. He quickly looked down, avoiding eye contact.

"I love you, Dan. For real."
