Chapter 28
Sophronia
If Ally and Jacob didn't put Dustin in a different room, we could have been out of here right now. I was just about to tell him that I found a possible exit from this room, but Ally's timing was always so impeccable, sarcasm intended.
I didn't want to try leaving without him, or without him knowing. I wanted him to be prepared just in case he had to stall or something.
There was no way of letting him know, however. I even tried asking Ally if I could see him, only to see if he was okay, but she told me he was. And that I had to stop asking if I wanted to make sure he stayed okay.
I hated that threat.
I didn't know how long we were here or how long we were going to be here, but I had a feeling Ally and Jacob were probably blackmailing my parents and Dustin's parents, most likely for money. I wouldn't doubt it if they were trying to use it so they can escape the country.
I really hoped that wouldn't happen and the police would find them soon. They deserved to be locked up for everything they did.
I sat on the floor, staring at the ground as I tried to think about what I could do. There was no way I could be able to communicate with Dustin without being in the same room as him, especially since our cell phones were taking away.
Or... Was there?
Maybe we didn't learn everything from the elderly lady at the antique store about being bonded to one another. Maybe there were more things we could do than just being able to see each other when the other is in a coma or feeling each other's pain.
It probably wasn't even a possibility.
Then again, neither did this whole bonding thing, so it was worth a shot.
I took a deep breath before closing my eyes, trying to concentrate on Dustin. When he was all that was on my mind, I began saying his name over and over again in my mind, hoping he would be able to hear me.
It felt useless, but I had to keep trying if I wanted this to work.
Just when I was about to give up, I heard his voice in my mind
Sophronia?
You can hear me?
Yeah. How did you know I would be able to?
It was a long shot. I had to try something and this, oddly, seemed like the one thing that would work. I had to tell you that I know how to get out of here.
How?
There's a vent in my room, on the ceiling. Is there one in yours?
It took a while for his reply to come back, but it did. No. You have to leave, though. Get help.
I will, but not yet. When Ally gives me food, I'll leave so she won't show up while I'm trying to.
Okay. They always come into my room before yours, so if they do before you get help, I'll try to stall them the best I could.
If you have to, tell them everything.
Soph, I can't.
That will get them to stay, and they won't be able to do anything about it because they'll soon be caught.
That's true. Okay, sounds like a plan.
Will you be okay?
I'll always be okay as long as you are. If this communicating thing still works, tell me when you're out and when you're close to getting help so I'll know how long I'll have to stall for.
Okay.
After Ally gives you food, wait about five minutes. That should be enough time for her to be long gone and she won't hear you trying to leave.
Got it.
