Chapter 3: Humanity

"I was just telling them about the outside world," Armin said, "then they called me a heretic and attacked us."

"Fools," Eren said as he skipped a rock across the water, "why can't people just let us dream about the outside?"

"We've been kept safe inside these walls for over a hundred years." Armin explained

(y/n) listened to them as she ran her fingers across the water. She wanted to go for a wim like what she and Ansel did before he left, but Armin said they weren't supposed to do that. She looked at her reflection in the crystal clear water. Her eyes looked exhausted with dark eye bags and red around her waterline from crying herself to sleep last night. As much as Ansel comforted her, she had nightmares about him. Bruises and small cuts were added onto her complexion due to the beating earlier. She dragged her hand back and forth one more time onto the water before sitting back onto the stairs.

"Someone will hear you," Mikasa said, bursting her bubble, "keep your voice down."

"Oh yeah," Eren said, "Thanks a lot for going behind my back a while ago."

"What?" Armin said.

"I didn't promise you anything." Mikasa said,

"You're parents know about the Scouts?" (y/n) asked Eren, but avoided eye contact.

"Yeah," Eren said.

"How did they take it?" Armin asked.

"Not so well,"

Armin sighed, "People are insane for believing these walls could keep us safe forever. There's no guarantee that at any moment the walls could break."

He was right. There's no way that this can hold forever. She thought, would I really be able to join the Scouts if that day actually came? Would I really be able to join, not just for Ansel, but for myself?

Suddenly, a large rumble, like an earthquake, came out of nowhere and shook the earth causing everyone to stumble and fall. (y/n) rolled over to the side, her oversized shirt and pants becoming tattered with dirt. What the-? She thought as she sat up, did that... come from the walls?

"Armin," Eren asked, "What is it?" Armin didn't answer and instead ran over to two men who were pointing at a wall.

"Armin!" Eren yelled running after him.

"Wait!" (y/n) yelled following after them both. They spotted him standing, staring at something. (y/n) looked at what he was looking at.

Near the outside of the wall, was a large gust of steam and a hand, covered in nothing but red muscle, grasped onto the wall. A dark shadow loomed over the city as a head stuck out from above the wall, covered with muscle like its hand.

"That can't be!" Armin exclaimed, "That wall is fifty meters high!"

Suddenly it all came to her. Freedom, was something to earn. They've been living in a cage and they were nothing but caged birds. A blasting sound came from the wall as rocks and debris came flying and spewing at all of the buildings.

"No way!" (y/n) yelled, "It broke through the wall!"

"Quick! We have to go-" Armin said as he noticed Eren going the other way, "Eren!"

"My house is over there. Mom's at home." Eren said as he ran against the crowd running towards the gate to Wall Maria. Mikasa behind him.

"Eren! Mikasa!" Armin yelled, his hand stretched out as if to reach out to them.
