‘I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss . . . oh. Carry on then,’ and I laughed through Eoin’s kiss.
We walked outside and into a flurry of confetti from waiting guests and the numerous instructions from the photographers (plural). Once the guests were plied with champagne and canapés, I was given the nod by one of the zoo co-ordinators. I took Eoin’s hand.
‘This way. Got something to show you.’
‘Oh yes, Mrs Macken? This better be good.’
‘Oh, it is.’
Passing through a very secure area, we were finally allowed into a viewing gallery overlooking their newest, and as yet unannounced, arrivals. In one area were two female tiger cubs, orphans, and in the other, the male, the one that Eoin had been filmed with and whose life we’d saved.
‘Hello boy,’ Eoin said, crouching down and looking through the glass. ‘How long have you been here?’
‘Four days now. I saw him the day before yesterday.’
‘Sneaky! I thought you were up here doing wedding stuff.’
‘I was. They asked me to name him.’
‘Awww, how sweet! What have you chosen?’
‘I’d have thought that was obvious. He’s naughty, greedy and already tried to mate with one of the females. I’ve named him Gwaine.’
THE END
