59: Wrong Side

After practice I stayed back as always, not only to get a few reps in but to talk to Shamar. As much as I didn’t want to, when Alex talked to me I had to really go back to my old ways.

“So you are going to jump the gate again?” Shamar said coming over to me as I picked up my helmet and looked at him.

As much as I wanted to bash his head in, I had different plans.

“Naw man,” I cleared my throat, “Just wanted to have a private talk with you.”

He nodded his head and we both walked over to the bleachers and sat down. He leaned back in the seat and looked at me.

“So Wassup?”

“Well,” I felt like the words couldn’t even come out of my mouth it was literally stuck in my throat.

“Well… I know you have something to say Cory. I know these past few weeks have been hard for you.”

I looked at him, “How do you know that?”

He smiled looking down at his palms then sighed.

“I’m your father, plus I have been talking to Alia.”

I gave a sigh of relief. Ever since she walked out on me I haven’t heard a single word from her, it really tore me to shreds to not even hear her voice.

“How is she? She’s okay? And the baby? What’s going on?” I questioned and he chuckled.

“Slow down man, she’s fine and the baby is fine and healthy, just the way everything went on gets to her time to time.”

“Man I’m sorry. It’s just hard you know, things I should have did I went the opposite. I apologize for even snapping on you letting alone punching you in the face it’s just a lot of emotions.”

“Emotions you can’t handle I know. I am going to be honest with you, leaving you and your mother behind did make me feel some type of way but then you had to realize that your mom made me watch from the sidelines I couldn’t have no contact with you at all and I do apologize. I missed a lot of things, you had to raise yourself as a man but you did it well you kept yourself grounded and you kept your mother grounded at all times and I give you all props for that, I really do.”

I already could feel myself choking up so bad to the point where tears were trying to break out.

“I could truly say that I thank god about Alex finding you because he cared for you and showed you everything in life as a best friend and a brother I really do. I know that things got bad after Alex death-” he choked up on my words and put his hand on my shoulder, “But you can’t let his death determine your future. I knew what type of boy Alex was he loved his brother more than anything and would do anything to take care of him and now you are becoming a man, you have to realize that now you have a family behind you and supports you more than anything and it is your responsibility to make them happy especially with this unborn child.”

Tears were already flowing down like waterworks and I was started to understand what he was starting to say and what Alex was trying to say. I couldn’t stay like this forever because of one thing that I thought that was wrong. I was building my supporters.

I reached over and gave Shamar a hug.

“Don’t think that you could call me son or I could call you dad aight?” we separated in our hugs and he chuckled.

“Everything is a step at a time man; I don’t want to get super smacked again. You pack a punch there.” He joked and I laughed.

“Listened momma packed a punch.” I said and got up picking up my equipment and started walking down the bleachers with Shamar.

Once we reached the end of the bleachers he looked over at me.

“You better go talk to Alia; she’s the one who deserves the apology more than me. That girl loves you to the core and unlike some girlfriends she not there for the money or the fame that you might be getting but she’s there because she loves you more than anything.”

I sighed; I wasn’t really ready at all. I knew I hurt her really bad so it was going to take time to even get through to her.
