Chapter Seven: Memories

“Do you think you’ll ever see him again?” Rosie asked me as we made our way down the beach, trying to fish our way through the tourist. This is what we did every summer, go out to the beach for a few hours, and watch the tourist boys hang out on the beach, and then we would leave and go out on the town at night and hang out with our friends that stayed around the town for the summer.

“Oh right here, this is a good spot.” Ivey called for us a few feet away, I smiled as I jogged a little over at her.

“I hope to see him again,” I told Rosie as I sat my stuff down on the sand.

“He’s dreamy.” Ivey smiled and laughed a little mocking me from what I told her last night as we walked around the town after our volleyball game where I had met Conrad.

“Isn’t that him on the board?” Kendall asked nodding in the direction of the ocean. I slipped my sunglasses to the top of my head and looked out into the water and smiled, as the board came closer to the shore. I watched the guy hop off the board and walk up shore. It was him. I smiled happily as the background noises of the world back to me.

“That is him!” Ivey called shaking me. I turned to her and nodded. “You should go talk to him.” She said pushing me toward his direction.

“No, I bet he won’t even remember me.” I sighed. Why would he want to remember me, I was just some local, nothing special about me. I wasn’t the skinniest girl around, nor was I the tannest or the prettiest. That’s what the tourist were for; they were here to make us locals look ugly.

“I bet he will.” Ivey smiled pushing me again. “Go, before I call him over here.” Ivey challenged. I nodded and made my walk over to him weaving through the tourist. He had made his way toward his towel and through down his board and sat down on his towel the same time I made it to him.

“Hey Conrad,” I smiled as I sat down next to him. He looked over at me and smiled.

“Hi, Brandy right?” He asked. I nodded with a soft smile painted on my lips. He smiled back and ran a hand through his wet hair.

“So, thanks again for catching our ball.” I told him, I was mentally slapping myself that was the stupidest thing to say.

“Oh, no problem, you’re welcome.” He smiled brightly at me.

“So are the waves good today?” I asked him nodding toward his board. He looked down at it, then back at me nodding.

“A swell is coming in so they are great today.” He told me smile.

“You know about the weather?” I asked him, it was normal for the locals to know what it means when the wind shifts a curtain way, normally tourist don’t really know things like that. It surprised me that he knew.

“Yeah, you learn a lot about random things when you’re a Marine.” He told me with a sight nod of his head.

“You’re a Marine?” I asked him. I know a stupid question, but it made him that much more handsome and beautiful in my eyes.

He nodded, “Yes ma’am. I’ve been in the core since I was eighteen so four years now.” He told me with a smile. I smiled back, trying to hide my shock. He’s twenty – two and I’m seventeen, there was no way he would like me now.

“That’s great, what you’re doing for our country, it’s amazing, but I’m only seventeen, so what would I really know about what you’re doing in the world.” I sighed, I didn’t want to lie to him, and it wasn’t the way I was brought up.

“You seem to know a lot.” He smiled down at me, and in that one smile I knew. I knew that he didn’t care about my age.

The day pasted with us just talking and learning things about each other. The sun was shifting making it way to fall through the sky. I looked over at him and smiled.

“So, I was wondering if you would like to come out tonight to the city?” I asked him as I stood. He stood with me grabbing his towel and folded it. “It’s just me and bunch of friends; we always go out to the city at night.” I told him, trying to get him to be okay with it. He smiled at me and nodded.

“Yes, it sounds like fun, you can show me what the locals like to do, in the city.” He told me. “I’ve always been a tourist; I would like to be a local now.” He added on. I smiled brightly up at him and nodded.

“Okay, meet in the city at the fountain at seven.” I told him with a smile as Ivey called for me in the background.

“Sounds like a plan, I’ll see you then.” He smiled as turned around and headed for the public beach parking lot. I smiled as I watched him go.
