I go down to the Great Hall for breakfast that Saturday before anyone else in my dorm. I had awoken from a disturbing dream and couldn't fall asleep again after that, so, I decided to try to eat something. Although I'm not very hungry, I think I might as well enjoy food while I can consume it. 'No', I think. 'I'm making myself miserable thinking like that'. So I stow away those thoughts and make my way over to where Lucinda sits at the Slytherin table by herself as well. I sit down beside her while she rubs her belly.
Luce looks up at me and smiles shakily. "Mira, you're up early."
"So are you," I comment while a selection of foods appear on the table for me, as well as a plate, bowl, spoon, fork, and butter knife.
"I'm always up early. The baby doesn't like to let me sleep more than three to four hours. Sometimes I get lucky and get about four point three hours," she chuckles sarcastically. I wince because I myself like to sleep.
"How far along are you," I ask. She grins a real happy grin this time.
"About fourteen weeks. I actually find out the gender today! I'm thinking for a girl we will name her Emrys June Malfoy and for a boy Lucius Abraxas Malfoy."
"Very...unusual names. Creative though."
"Well, I like them," she smiles happily and picks up a bit of dry toast, grimaces at it, and takes a dainty bite. I grab the plate and put on it a raspberry filled pastry and I pick a banana to go with it, choosing some orange juice to go with it all. Luce gives my plate a heated glare before violently ripping into her dry, flavorless toast.
The door opens as I'm about to cut into my pastry and I watch as Tom slinks in and takes up residence at the same spot at the table he always sat. Away from everyone else. I watch him curiously as he takes a book out from his robes and opens it on the table, and starts buttering a bagel as he reads.
"I wouldn't waste your time," Luce says idly. "He thinks he is too good for anyone here. I know, I've tried." She gives me an evil smirk and I can't help but laugh quietly.
"Sounds like a challenge," I tease.
"Take it as you will," she waves it off.
Just then, through the window, flies a white and golden owl that makes a bee line for me. It flies over my head with its wings spread wide and a shriek comes from its beak making me throw my arms up to protect my face. It has an envelope clutched in its claws that it drops into my lap, and then it flew off furiously as if delivering a letter was the last thing that had been on its agenda. Can't say that I blame it.
My fingers play with the thick cream colored paper of the envelope. It isnt marked, but I know who it is from and excitement grips it's tight fingers in my chest. I tear open the flap and pull out the parchment inside.
Mira,
I know it's been quite some time since last we spoke, but you are now, somewhat, free of Lestat. It's safer now.Tell me all about your new school life. Do you like it? You've never been to a school where you don't go home every day, does it get redundant at all? I suppose you're happier, aren't you? And why wouldn't you be? You're free!
Sort of.
Things here are getting dark. I'm so lonely, but I know I can never go back. You don't realize it, but we are closer than you think. Close enough where I can protect you.
Remember; you're never alone. I'm here.
~Louis
I sigh and fold the paper back up and place it in my robes pocket.
"Who is Louis," Luce asks. Her eye brow is raised and her plump pink lips are quirked up in a sly smile. "Boyfriend?"
"My uncle," I say, wrinkling my nose in distaste. "He is a lot friendlier than my... Stepfather."
"Oh... And your mum?"
"Dead."
"Oh..." Her eyes are down cast and her hands go back around her round belly. I feel eyes on me, staring me down with an intent that made my skin crawl. When I met the cold, blue eyes of Tom, he is leaning into the table with a hand on his chin. "He's is staring at you again," whispers Luce.
"It appears that way," I reply. Luce snickers and nudges me with her elbow.
"It's so strange. He never looks at anyone that curiously. Go talk to him!"
"Alright," I smile shyly. "I will." I stand up and go over to where Tom sits, and cross my arms, making myself appear goofy. "Are you following me?"
Tom looks up at me with a charming white grin. "Why ever would I want to follow you, Ms. De Lioncourt?"
"I don't know. Perhaps I intrigue you."
"Perhaps you do." He looks me up and down with an unreadable expression. "Or perhaps not."
"Well," I say spitefully as I sit down in front of him. "Then I suppose you'll have to suffer through my company."
"Torturous."
"Seriously, though, why are you staring at me?"
He is quiet for a moment, chewing on the inside of his cheek like he is chewing on his words. "I'm...curious."
"About what? There's nothing too out of the ordinary about me."
"Not about you," he says slowly. I felt my stomach drop in disappointment. I couldn't deny that Riddle was attractive. "I'm curious about your vampire stepfather."
I go completely still as our eyes connect once more and the friendly persona he had before seems to melt away before me and I'm left feeling like I have stones in my stomach. Something told me to not tell him what he wanted to know.
"Theres really nothing to tell. Open any vampire history book from the past 164 years and youll find all you need to know."
"The books are all vague and explain nothing. Speculation, mostly."
"Look, approach him yourself if you want answers," I growl and stand up, glaring down at him. I know full well he wouldn't dare go near such a dangerous creature. He isn't that powerful, is he?
"I will," he says calmly, staring me down. I roll my eyes at him. His face goes soft and he smirks at me. A strand of his dark hair falls into his eyes and I feel butterflies floating in my belly. I feel a pull towards him like I want to be closer, and all of a sudden I feel tingly between my legs.
I clear my throat awkwardly and stand up straighter. "I um...I should get back to my friend."
Tom looks behind me at Luce who is chatting happily with a mousy looking brown haired girl. "Yes, Ms. Sheffield certainly looks lonely."
"Yes, she must be missing my company," I smirk. "I know I'm missing hers. It's a lot better than yours," I huff playfully and turn on my heal, marching back to Luce with a cocky smile on my face.
