Another app showed up from nowhere. It was making these weird beeps, long and short. The baby girl was looking at me with her mouth open wide, listening carefully. She extended her little arm and I handed over the device, which she put beside her ear immediately. Sucking her thumb in concentration, it looked like she was figuring something out. I pondered how fast she has been growing up: the first day her body was one of a newborn, now she looks as if she is a year old.
Somebody knocked on the door and I expected to see a repentant mother, but it was Consuelo.
