Chapter 53 - Tobias

I sit with my arms around Tris. She hasn't spoken to me or anyone so far. Cara told me that sometimes a shock as big as this can render a person incapable of speech. I silently pray that this is not the case with Tris. I would miss the way that she would blurt out whatever was on her mind.

Christina went to see if she could find out if anyone in the Bureau had been untouched by the memory serum. I am just about to ask Cara where all the other people we inoculated went when-

"I shot him."

I start as the sound of Tris's voice breaks through my thoughts.

"What?"

"I shot him," Tris says again.

"Shot who?" I ask her.

"David. He shot Caleb, and I-I killed him," she says, her eyes even wider than before.

I pull Tris close to me and hug her. She buries her face in my shoulder and shudders. We sit like this in silence for a while, until we are interrupted by Peter.

"Have you guys seen this place?" He asks, staring around in great amazement and wonder, "It's amazing!"

Cara raises an eyebrow at me.

"He reset his memory," I say, shrugging.

Cara stares at Peter for a second, then goes back to pressing the ice pack to the bruise on her head.

Tris turns to me. "Tobias-" she starts, before she is quite abruptly interrupted. A voice comes over the Public Announcement system.

"Beatrice Prior. Would Beatrice Prior please report to the medical station immediately?" says the voice.

Next to me, Tris goes rigid. Her eyes are wide, terrified. She shakes as she stands up. I know the news probably won't be good, and I want to go with her, but I know I can't.
