Chapter 56 - Tris

Tobias and I run down the halls, sprinting towards Uriah's room. I had almost forgotten that they were unplugging him today, what with all the confusion and mayhem.

When we reach his room, we pause for a moment outside to catch out breath, then Tobias pushes open the door. Hana, Zeke, Cara, Peter, Christina, and Mathew are already there. Hana sits next to Uriah's bed, clutching one of his hands while Zeke stands on other side of Uriah, silent tears streaming down his face. Christina just stares blankly, like she can't believe that this is actually happening, and Cara wipes her eyes hastily with her sleeve. Mathew shakes his head sadly, and Peter, though I'm not sure he knows who exactly Uriah is, can at least gather enough information to know that he should be sad, too.

A doctor stands in the corner with a clipboard. Next to him are the machines that keep Uriah alive. The doctor scribbles something down on his clipboard and positions his hand over some switches, preparing to turn of the machines that beat Uriah's heart for him.

I stare at Uriah. Maybe if I stare hard enough, he'll wake up.

The doctor flips the first switch.

Zeke and Hana each grab one of Uriah's hands. Then they hold one another's free hands.

I feel Tobias's fingers interlock with mine.

I continue to stare at Uriah, telling him to wake up, willing him to live.

The doctor flips the second switch.

"Come on Uriah," I whisper, "You can do this. Just open your eyes."

The doctor's hand is now positioned over the third and final switch, the one that controls the machine that keeps Uriah's heart beating.

"Now. Now, Uriah," I push my eyelids together as hard as I can, until colored spots appear, then open them again to see if Uriah has moved. My silent begging becomes more and more frantic with every second that passes, "Open your eyes Uriah. Open them. Now."

The doctor's hand comes down on the switch.

"Please."
