Chapter 6

A Night to Meet and Greet ALL the People You Try to Avoid on a Regular Basis

"It's not a big deal, Elena!" I yelled, angry. She laughed and pushed me into the school gym. "You look great!" she squealed and pushed me further. I wore a black lacy vintage dress, fingerless gloves to match, black heels, and multiple accessories. I felt odd, since it was a 50's dance. I was the odd one out.

The gym was filled with starry balloons touching the roof. Some of the balloons had fallen and were being kicked around by the dancers. Streamers covered the walls and disco balls hung from the ceiling. Everyone looked spectacular, especially Matt, who I saw in the distance.

"Elena," I saw Stefan kiss her sweetly on the cheek. I took a big gulp of air and looked the other way. After what happened in the woods with Damon, I wanted to avoid them all. What if Stefan snapped? Has he snapped? Has he bitten Elena? I felt my palms begin to produce sweat.

"Hello, Aria." he greeted intently. He looked like he was trying to be gentle with me. "Uh..I would like to apologize for what had happened earlier." he continued and I looked up at him. "It's nothing I would like to discuss, though, I appreciate it." I said kindly as I watched the girls in poodle skirts be twirled by their football jock boyfriends. "Are you sure?" he asked once more. I nodded and sighed. "I'm sure." I looked around once more, not sure who I was searching for. I was hoping the night would go by smoothly.

"Bonjour, Aria." Caroline greeted, Bonnie right behind her. "You look....vintage, tonight." Bonnie stated and smiled. I looked down at my outfit and smiled softly. "Last minute outfit." I stated and she nodded understandingly. I guess I wasn't exactly blending very well. Not good.

"You guys look great." I complimented them, noticing their spot-on 50's attire. "Thanks, I worked on my hair for at least an hour." Caroline said, though, her hair looked as if it were just a regular bun. "It shows." Elena complimented, trying to be polite. Maybe one day I'll be able to tolerate Caroline, but as of now, she irked me.

"You too, Stefan!" Caroline squealed. "Look at all that leather." Bonnie purred and we all laughed. Silence began and soon extended way too long; the only sound being the loud 50's music. "Uh...I'm going to go get some punch." I stated and made my way to the snack table.

I saw Jeremy behind the table stirring the red liquid repeatedly in a slow motion; a bored expression on his face. He wore regular casual clothes, not bothering to dress up for the event. He looked up and saw me.

"Hey, Jeremy." I greeted, sticking a carrot dipped in ranch into my mouth. He smiled and removed a Styrofoam cup from the plastic. "Hey, Aria. Are you enjoying the dance?" he asked me, a boyish smile on his face as he grabbed the silver spoon and dumped the fruit punch into the cup, some of it sliding down the side sloppily. I sighed. "Not really," I stopped talking once I saw Matt approach. I restrained myself from biting my lower lip.

"Hey, Aria." he greeted, 'cuz that's what tonight was filled with: greetings from people I had to keep secrets from. I stared up into his blue eyes. Even in the darkened gymnasium they shined like precious stones...so blue and liquidly...I was a wreck. I never did notice my large crush on him until I saw him and Caroline together.

"Hey, Matt." I whispered, sadly, remembering how he and Caroline were together now, all of a sudden. He smiled. "Came here alone?" he asked taking a sip from his drink. Jeremy left, I assumed he went to get more food. I nodded. "Not exactly." I said trying to not sound so pathetic.

"I guess the cat's out of the bag," we both turned our heads and saw Damon come sauntering over, a smirk visible on his face. My heart ached, knowing what he had done to me. Ripping my flesh, engorging on my blood... I shivered in remembrance. I wanted to leave, NOW.
