A Girl at King Arthur's Court

Summary

A retelling and reimagining of the King Arthur's stories with a modern twist. A different take on the old characters, and the introduction of new ones. A closer look at the Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot love triangle mixed with a snarky and genre-savvy female main character. This story has a little bit of everything. Is it a mess? Probably. But I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Here comes the story's description: Amara Knight, an aspiring author and freelance photographer, lead an ordinary life in London, but had always dreamt of big adventures and the opportunity to write the ultimate epic. One day her blissfully boring life is interrupted by the appearance of a thick and mysterious fog that hides old secrets and wicked sorcery. In the days that follow, Amara learns more and more of the destiny that was written for her. A destiny that connects her to an ancient prophecy and heroes of the past, but also to an age-old grudge that threatens to destroy England and the world as she knows it. She must face what comes.
But can a mere author stand a chance against evil sorcerers and dark, magical creatures? And when the world hangs in the balance, does she have other choices than to fight?

Writer's Interview:

1. How long have you been writing?

"I first started when I was eleven or twelve but nothing professional."

2. What made you want to be a writer?

"I started writing to improve my spelling, honestly. We used to have weekly assignments at school and whoever had the best-written one got to read it out loud. My assignments were never read out loud because I had too many errors so I started practicing. And I just continued writing and trying to improve my writings."

3. How did you discover Wattpad?

"I think I was looking for stories to read and stumbled on the app on the App Store. I joined first as a reader because I was too busy with university and the novel I've been working on the last many years to write on Wattpad."

4. Where do you gain inspiration?

"I usually gain inspiration from history and myths and the intersection between the two. I also find inspiration in my own life as a struggling author 😄, the compromises you have to do. And of course TV, I love fantasy shows and medieval shows!"

5. What genre do you usually write?

"I write fantasy, mostly. With elements of science fiction and historical fiction. It's almost mostly YA and NA."

6. Which genre do you read the most?

"I read almost all genres and enjoy them, but I prefer historical fiction."

7. How do you think your writing impacts you?

"It is the only thing my world revolves around. I can't sit or do anything without thinking about the scenes I'm about write."

8. Nicest comment you've received?

"In real life, one of my elementary school teachers read one of my manuscripts and told me I just publish it. It's something I try to remember when I'm contemplating giving up. I have not received a comment that was anything other than neutral on Wattpad."

9. Any advice for your possible new followers?

"Writing advice: 1: Demand of your work when you demand from the works that you read. 2: And be nice to yourself. You are trying as hard as you can, you are human, too. Life advice: Be your own strongest supporter and forgive your shortcomings. Don't indulge them either though."

Details. I love them. If there is anything I love more than characters, it's the details the writer puts into their books. Details create everything, and that's what makes books so interesting to me because everyone's world of details is different. This book proves that people view things differently, what's important to the scenery, the characters, the writer. However, Crissa was right in some parts, it is a bit choppy for my taste in books, but the details make up for it.  If I had any problems with this book, it was the beginning. I wrote in my rants weeks ago that the first sentence in a book should be the most important one. It needs to be gripping, exciting, and something the reader doesn't want to stop reading. If I'm being honest here, it was difficult to continue because I wasn't interested yet. I want to be thrilled to read this, but I just didn't feel it until I got to the end of the prologue and into the first chapter. However, after I got past the first author's note, I LOVED IT. It just got better. The transitions on how the writing gets better makes me happy because they're improving their writing as they went on. You can see it as it flows through the story. And I loved it.

I love how they used a POC for the main character. I don't see very many of that, especially with fantasy books like this. It's even better that this King Arthur book has a modern twist in it, to me, it's like a breath of fresh air to the old tale of medieval kings and queens. I like old fantasy, it's one of the reasons why I love Lord of the Rings, but this is just interesting in its own light. It's unique, and after the first few chapters, I wanted more and more. I'm up to date so far, and I just want to continue it even though there aren't more chapters yet! It's beautiful, and the characters are well written. There are a few grammar errors here and there, but who doesn't have those?  I think the story will get better and better as time goes on, and I'm excited about it!

Personally, I like the concept they were going for. However, it's a tad laxking in some areas, like the beginning, so it's kind of hard to delve into the story at first. Seeing how so many stories are like that on Wattpad anyway, I continued reading the book. However, one of my favorite things in this book is the dialogue. It makes me feel like I'm in their time, which is the purpose of a writer. It was authentic, real, and it just made it all the more enjoyable. I read the book of King Arthur once, and I don't remember much, but if I wanted to remember anything, I want to remember this story.
