Chapter 7

Justin's POV

I parked my car in Selena's driveway. I ran my hand over my face tiredly since I had gotten no sleep last night before I got out and went over to ring her doorbell.

"Good morning Justin." Her mom smiled, gesturing for me to come in.

"Hi Mandy." I smiled weakly.

"She's just finishing up breakfast. Would you like to have something?"

"Coffee please?"

"No problem.  Sit down, I'll make you a cup."

"Hi princess." I leaned down to kiss Selena's head. "How are you feeling this morning?"

"I feel great!" I grinned.

"Well I'm glad." I grinned back. We quickly finished up since we didn't have that much time to spare before we were late.

"I'm glad you picked me up Jay." Selena mentioned as we walked into school.

"Oh really?"

"Mhm. You're fun."

"I'm glad you think so. Now come on, we have math."

"Yuck." She stuck her tongue out then pouted.

"I bet if you do your assignment you'll get more stickers." I bribed and her eyes lit up instantly.

"Let's go!"

I laughed. "That's my girl."

"You okay bro?" Ryan asked as he approached our table at lunch.

"I don't know. I've been trying not to think about it." I admitted.

Selena stopped what she was doing and turned her attention to me. "What's wrong? Are you sad?"

"A little bit princess. Not when I'm with you."

"Well then you can stay with me all the time!"

"I would if I could but it's not that simple."

"Why not? Why are you sad?"

I thought of the best way to explain it to her.

"You know how you have a mommy and daddy?"

"Yeah."

"Well I only have a mommy. My daddy died only two years ago and now my mommy is trying to make someone else my daddy."

"That's not fair. Why did your daddy die?"

"He got into an accident."

"Like me?"

"Something like that."

"Oh." She remained silent as she pondered something.

"But then isn't it a good thing that you're getting a new daddy?"

"I don't want a new daddy. Would you trade your daddy?"

"No. But if I didn't have him maybe I would want a new one. I need my daddy."

I hugged her to me, evaluating the meaning behind her words.

"She's right bro." Ryan explained. "Jaz and Jax need a dad and so do you. Your mom needs someone too. I know you miss him and that no one can replace him but he can be there for you guys. I know how rough things have been and your mom does look happier."
