“Thanks for the coffee, Jem,” Thomas smiled at the barista.

“No problem, Thomas,” James returned the smile.

Thomas grabbed the two coffees after placing a giant tip in the tip jar. He winked at James and headed toward his table, where Alexander was waiting for him on his phone. “I’m back with the coffees.”

“Aww, sweet, thanks,” Alex said cheerily.

“No problem,” Thomas replied and handed him his coffee. “So...how are classes so far?”

“Not bad, honestly. Yours?”

“Eh, I’m not sure yet,” Thomas shrugged and sipped his coffee. “It’s only the first week, you know?”

“Yeah, you’re right,” Alex smiled a little and sipped his own coffee.

It was quiet for a moment before someone else walked into the coffee shop. Thomas turned to look and saw Angelica Schuyler getting in line for coffee with her sisters.

“The Schuyler Sisters,” Thomas noted more to himself than to Alexander.

“Everybody knows all three of them hate my guts,” Alex groaned and avoided their eye contact.

“Angelica’s not half bad. I don’t know much about her sisters, but I remember I met Angelica in Paris last summer,” Thomas’ eyes landed directly on Angelica’s and the sister smiled and waved.

Thomas waved back.

“She roasted me pretty badly when I ruined Eliza’s life,” Alex looked over his own coffee, watching small bubbles swirl as he stirred. “We actually sort of had a thing for each other.”

“What? Really?” Thomas asked surprised.

“Mmhm,” the immigrant took a long swig of his coffee before continuing, “We met a couple days before that big dance Washington was throwing. We matched wits, we were at the same level, everything we said in total agreement and instantly, I knew she was the one...that is, until she introduced me to her sister.”

“Wow,” Thomas was speechless and sipped on some more coffee. “So she just gave you her sister?”

“Kinda.”

“Well, well, if it isn’t Thomas Jefferson,” a voice sang and instantly, Thomas knew it was Angelica.

“Only if it isn’t the Angelica Schuyler,” Thomas winked back, and Alexander inwardly fumed.

“I see you and Hamilton have worked out your differences.”

“Mmhm. We’re friends now,” Alexander mumbled before standing up to leave. “I have a class to get to. I’ll see you later, Thomas.”

“I thought you didn’t have a class...and he’s gone,” Thomas sighed. “Sorry, I don’t know what his problem is.”

“I know exactly what his problem is, the no good cheater,” Peggy mumbled under her breath as she plopped down in Alexander’s seat.

Eliza silently took the seat to Peggy’s left and Angelica sat to Peggy’s right.

“Hah, you can say that again,” Thomas agreed.

“Wait...you and Alexander…?”

“Yeah, we were dating for a while,” Thomas supplied the answers Angelica needed. “See, we had this puppy named Macaroni-” Peggy snorted at the name. “-and we kinda bonded by taking care of him together. Friendship turned to love and everything was lovey-dovey until I went to France while he worked at an internship….about a week before I was scheduled to return, he Skyped me telling me he had cheated on me with John Laurens.”

“You’d think he’d learned his lesson,” Eliza mumbled quietly. “I’m sorry, if you want to talk about it, I’m here for you.”

“Thanks, Eliza, I really appreciate that,” Thomas smiled, “but that won’t be necessary. We’re taking a little break from each other and we might get back together.”

“What? Why?” Angelica asked.

“I mean, he had the guts to tell me and I could tell he instantly regretted everything and I knew in that moment that he would never ever do anything like that again,” Thomas shrugged.

“Be careful, Thomas,” Angelica warned concerned. “I wouldn’t trust him again.”

“You honestly deserve much better anyway,” Peggy chugged her caramel macchiato in one fell swoop.

“You think so?” Thomas looked at Peggy.

“Mmhm!” Peggy nodded. “Anyone who cheats on you doesn’t deserve a second chance.”

“Yeah, I think you’re being too soft on him,” Angelica agreed. “Give him time to take in his misbehavior.”

“How long did it take before you and Alexander were back on talking terms?” Eliza asked.

“A little over two weeks after he told me,” Thomas shrugged.

“Oh no, no! That’s way too soon to forgive him,” Peggy shook her head. “You shouldn’t even be on talking terms.”

“Ladies, it’s fine,” Thomas ran his fingers through his curls and sighed. “I really think Alexander is a great guy, and I still love him, or at least a part of me does.”

“Thomas, you’re too easy,” Angelica rolled her eyes. “How can you trust him to not do something like this again? What if you leave without him again? What if he cheats on you again?”

“Look, I don’t want to talk about it. I gotta get to class now, anyway,” Thomas stood up to leave. “I’ll see you girls later.”

“Hey,” Angelica grabbed Thomas’ wrist before he was able to go anywhere. The latter looked down at the oldest sister. “Just be careful, okay? That’s all I’m trying to say.”

“Don’t worry,” Thomas smiled. “I will, promise.”

Seeming okay with that answer, Angelica let go of Thomas’ wrist. Thomas waved a final goodbye before running off to class.

“I guess I just panicked,” Alexander complained to Lafayette and Hercules. “I wasn’t expecting to see The Schuyler Sisters so soon. I didn’t know Thomas was so close to them, well...at least close enough to sit with us.”

“Mon ami, everything will be alright,” Laf placed a hand on his shoulder. “I’m sure The Sisters are over it by now.”

“No, you should’ve seen their faces when they saw me,” Alex placed his hands over his face. “I will never live that down.”

“Well, what you did was unforgivable, at least to them,” Hercules pointed out.

Alex hit his head down on his desk not feeling like talking about it anymore. Why did he have to be so easy? Why did he have to cave in so easily?

“Alex? Are you okay?” Laf asked concerned, but Alexander didn’t reply.

He knew he was probably being melodramatic, but he couldn’t help it. He shouldn’t have done what he did and he felt he didn’t deserve great friends like the ones he had.
