Chapter 6:
"Were you eavesdropping?!" I had just finished a movie when he came romping down the stairs. "Yeah, obviously." He began to talk with a sort of caution in his voice, as if I might explode at anytime. "What all did you hear, if you don't mind me asking?" He slid down onto the opposite side of the couch, "Everything." Well this is just what I need, "Ok... How did you know I was down here?" I heard him mumble some cuss words, "I was looking around.. for something." This is really weird, "In my closet? Charlie, what were you looking for in my closet?" Another lovely string of cuss words and then he mumbled something, "What was that? I can't hear you." He looked at me, his cheeks turning a dark shade of red, "I was looking through your undergarments." This made me blush so much I felt like a tomato, "Why would you need any of my undergarments?" He looked down at his feet and laughed, "We've been friends for so long... and you've never wondered why I stuck around, why I took care of you when you were sick, or held you when you cried. I care about you. Like, a lot." This made me want to cry. I'd never actually thought of why he took care of me. I always thought he was being a friend. "Charlie, I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry. But I can only be friends with you. I promise nothing between us will change. Actually, hopefully this will bring us closer, and make me realize that somebody loves me. And I will definitely come to you if something happens." This made him smile, "I guess with Brandon showing up and all, I got jealous because you two have been spending a lot if time together... and I wish it could be me and not him." I nodded and walked over to him and put my head on his chest, as I did this his heart fluttered. "I won't tell anyone about this as long as you promise not to tell anyone what you heard." When he said "Ok." there was a sincerity in his voice letting me know that his words were true.
The next morning I woke up curled up in my bed dressed in my PJ's. I didn't remember changing into my PJ's, so Charlie must have happily done the honors. I made a mental note to punch him as I put on a pink crop-top and a pair of Miss Me shorts. When I got down stairs, the back door opened and there stood Brandon in all his workout glory. He had on a pair of black shorts, with no shirt on, the sun glistened off the sweat on his chest. I couldn't form words or do much except stand there and stare at him. "Well good morning sunshine, didn't expect you up this early." When I looked up at the clock, I realized it was 7:30 a.m. "Well I wanted to be up early enough to make breakfast. I have to feed 3 boys you know." He walked over with a smirk on his face, "So am I really that sexy to where you can't even look at my face?" I realized what he was saying and turned away so he couldn't see the blush forming on my cheeks, but before I could turn around his hand caught my chin and turned me back towards him, "I love it when you blush." I hated that he said that because now I'm blushing even harder. I swatted his hand away, hating the effect he had on me. Guys don't usually have this kind of effect on me, but Brandon's different, and that makes me all the more cautious.
When breakfast was finally ready Charlie came bounding down the steps like a little puppy, whereas Jesse just kind if trudged down them, only caring enough to not trip. He had also forgotten to fix his hair. As I watched them over my plate of waffles, I wondered how in the world were those two best friends. They were unbelievably different in every way. Jesse liked big sweaty parties full of wasted girls and dancing, and Charlie liked afternoon picnics, fresh from a game of baseball. But I knew they loved each other to death. Just like I knew they both loved me.
Brandon had gone out to do something, claiming it was a surprise for me, which made me all giddy wanting to know what it is. He finally arrived with a frustrated expression, but when he saw me he smiled. "Kaitlyn? Will you come here? I want to show you something." It must be pretty great. "Yeah sure." As I got up from where I was watching Charlie and Jesse arm wrestle for the last waffle, I grabbed a bite of the last waffle they were wrestling for, ignoring their complaints.
