REMUS'S POV

The next day, the castle was buzzing with the news of Sirius Black. Apparently, he had attempted to break into Gryffindor Tower last night. On Halloween of all days! But then Sirius wouldn't care, would he? He betrayed the Potters!

Sighing, he took his place at the staff table for breakfast. "Tough night, huh?" Anna asked sympathetically, drawing a chair next to him. He nodded- they both knew what was coming up.

"Well," Anna said loftily, "At least Snape consented to make the potion for you."

He made a face. "But you'll cover, right?"

She shrugged. "Snape plans to, but I've got an errand."

Remus looked up from his plate. "An errand?"

Anna said, "Yeah. You know what an errand is, right?"

He smiled halfheartedly. "Ha, ha. Where is it?"

"I, uh," Anna stuttered, "Um, I gotta go check on our house and then go to Gringotts."

"Our hOuSe?" he cried in disbelief.

It was too late- Anna had left the table without a response.

Maybe it was because of yesterday, he reasoned. Dam you, Halloween.

ANNA'S POV

Dam, dam, DaM, she thought as she rushed down the corridor. That dog from yesterday- it was Sirius! She remembered seeing it during her school years along with a stag (most likely her pathetic excuse for her brother) and a rat (most likely that pathetic excuse for a wizard, or human being, even).

How could she have been so blind?

It was her who had told him about recent activities of Hogwarts. It was her fault he had got in!

Wand at the ready, she stalked into the Forbidden Forest, trying to remember the path she took yesterday.

"Sirius?" she called softly.

No response.

"Sirius!" she shouted.

Then there it was. The faint rustling of the bushes.

"Sirius, I'm not going to turn you in- I only have questions," she said desperately. Her words were half truth- she would ask her questions, and then turn him in if guilty.

A black head popped out of the bushes.

She crept closer. "It's me- Anna. Surely you remember?"

POP!

Quick as a snap, the dog transformed into a person that haunted her brain.

"Anna?" Sirius said hoarsely.

She nodded cautiously.

"It wasn't me, it was the rat, I swear-" he pleaded.

The wheels in her brain began to turn.

The rat? Oh!

"The rat? You mean Pettigrew? He's dead!" she sputtered.

He shook his head. "No, he- wait, how did you know-"
