I walked into the cafeteria, trying not to cringe at the loud noise. People were everywhere, perched ok top of the tables instead of actually sitting in them, laying back against the discolored walls, and even worse; the smell of the food wafting through the air was utterly disgusting.
It didn't look appetizing either, yellow slop that I swear to god moved at some point. I shudder involuntarily before moving outdoors, finally find a bit of peace under the warm sun. I wish I could be wearing shorts like every other girl here, but Janice doesn't want me whoring around the human population, her words, not mine.
I finally find a spot under a huge oak, smiling to myself as I pulled out the book I've been reading. I decided to reread Interview with a Vampire, and was already halfway through it again. I open it slowly and let myself get sucked into the story, not paying attention to the world around me.
It isn't until the book gets snatched from my hands that I look up, finding all three boys staring down at me expectedly. "Huh?"
"We've been calling your name for the past five minutes, didn't you hear us?" I look at Theo sheepishly, shaking my head slightly.
"Sorry, got a bit, uh, distracted." Finch snorts as he flops back onto the ground in front of me, eyeing the dirt warily like its going to jump out and bite him. Ronan and Theo follow behind, although not as dramatically as Finch.
"What's she reading?" He asks Ronan, who was now looking over my book.
It wasn't a newer edition, instead one my father had. It's spine was worn and cracked, along with yellowing pages and a stained front cover with no paper cover. My father had written along all of the pages, including a note to me inside the front page. He had given it to me when I turned five, making me to promise not to read it until I was at least twelve.
That actually didn't work though. I ended up reading it around the time I turned seven and was insanely bored on the way to Europe to play in a couple different countries. Janice didn't care, and gave me books purely for the fact that they shut me up.
"Interview with a Vampire." He says quietly, rubbing his thumb along the cracked spine. He smiled softly to himself, a light blush tinging the tips of his ears.
"Have you read it?" I ask him quietly, finding my hand now being held by Theo as he settles himself closer to me. It sends tingles through my bones, goosebumps erupting across my skin as he rubs his thumb against my knuckles.
"When I was younger." He flips through the pages, stoping on the front page with a surprised look. He looks back up to me with raise eyebrows, his eyes twinkling and shining as he looks at me. "Do you speak German?"
"Ja, ich spreche Deutsch, sowie ein paar andere Sprachen." (Yes I speak German, as well as many other languages.) Traveling under Janice's watchful eye surprisingly had a few upsides, like learning most of the major languages that were spoken around the world.
