The flickering yellow light of the street lamps shone in the dark puddles. Each black cobble was slippery with rain, and Arida hobbled carefully, trying not to slip. The lashes across her back twinged and she winced. The was not much debt left to pay, only a thousand pounds. Her mind flashed back to the night of her fathers death, and the grief and hunger afterwards. The debt seemed like a good idea, a way to raise Gracie properly, and a fair deal. But it was all deception. In a year they were hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt, and Arida had offered to become an assassin to pay him. The boss. The person they owed money to. The person who gave her these wounds. She gritted her teeth. One day she would be free, and never have to kill again. She kept that thought in her mind as she enter her house and greeted her friends.
