It was a couple of minutes past ten when I stumbled into the flat, hoping that people would still be here. I heard Dakota talking to Lucy in the living room, and exhaled in relief. As long as Lucy's still here, everything's fine. Dakota and I barely fight, but I knew she was going to be upset that I missed the party.

The two girls lowered their voices when I closed the front door. I tried to be as quiet as I possible could when I took off my shoes and hung my jacket on a coat hanger. Then I heard Dakota excusing herself and before I knew it, she was standing right in front of me with her arms crossed.

"Happy birthday." I tried, slightly smiling. "Please, don't be mad."

"I'm not mad." She shrugged. "I just wanted you to be here to celebrate my birthday with me, that's all."

"I know you did, and I wanted to be here too. But the restaurant needed me."

I walked towards her, hoping I could at least hug her.

"I haven't seen you all day." She said pouting. "You were still asleep when I left this morning and when I got back from work, you weren't home."

"I'm here now, so let's celebrate."

I could see her lips twitching a bit as she was holding back a smile. So I did what I always do when I want to hear her laughing.

I launched towards her, catching her in my arms. My fingers went under her shirt and started tickling her. It's her biggest weakness and in just a couple of seconds she was laughing hysterically and telling me to stop.

"You two will always have a childish relationship, won't you?"

I stopped tickling her when I heard Lucy's voice. She was standing by the doorway to the living room, leaning against the wall with her jacket in one hand.

Dakota squirmed out of my arms so she could hug her friend. She thanked her for coming, and staying before I came home. Lucy walked past me, giving me a quick kiss on the cheek like always, before leaving the apartment.

I launched towards my beautiful girlfriend again, swooping her up in my arms. She squealed a little by my sudden move and I carried her into the living room. I flopped her down upon the sofa, crawled up on her and started kissing her all over her face. She giggled in my ear, telling me to get off. But I just shook my head.

"Your birthday present is waiting for you in the bedroom." I mumbled against her skin.

"Don't tell me sex is my present."

I looked up. "No, but we can do that too if you want."

She grinned and brought our lips together. Those sweet, soft lips that I couldn't get enough of.

Who would have thought that asking her out that day in April one and a half year ago, would lead to us living together? Who would have thought that taking her mini golfing would make her fall in love with me? Dakota Jones was a popular girl in high school, and she ended up with me; the football player with average grades and fighting parents. She on the other hand was in drama club, had straight A's and was the only child. Everyone thought she would end up with Tyson Williams. I thought so too. I mean he was just as popular as she was and every girl craved his attention. Well, every girl except mine.

I pulled away from her lips and crawled up from the sofa.

"Stay right there." I told her before rushing down the hall to get to our bedroom.
