Two years later.
It was May 2022 and our apartment was filled with people. Jamie is turning two and he's running around like never before. He likes the attention; so throwing him a big birthday party was an obvious thing to do. A few of his friends from kindergarten was here with their parents and hearing seven loud kids screaming at the same time has never been on my bucket-list.
I was in the kitchen, putting candles in the cake, when Dakota suddenly wrapped her arms around me from behind.
"I can't wait to go to bed tonight." She mumbled into my back.
"Just two more hours, then we put him down for the night." I told her. "Do you want the honour and light the candles?"
Instead of answering my question, she forced me around and kissed me. I placed my hands on her waist, immediately pulling her closer.
Ever since Jamie was born we haven't really had that much time together. We try to still do things together as a couple, but it's not always easy finding a babysitter. So we often go back to Mullingar, leave Jamie with our parents and go away for the night.
"I have something to tell you." She said against my lips, running her fingers through my hair. "I've been dying to tell you for the last couple of days."
"Tell me then. I don't want you to die." I said, stealing another kiss from her lips.
"Around February next year, I'm gonna need you to take me to the hospital."
I leaned away a little, looking at her.
She bit her bottom lip, hiding a smile and looked down at her stomach.
"You're pregnant?" I questioned.
"Isn't it perfect timing? I mean you just got promoted at the record label and Lucas gave me a raise the other day. And you know how much Jamie has been begging for a sibling."
I smiled, hugging her tightly.
"You really need to learn to keep these kind of news away from birthdays." I chuckled.
"Well, it's not like I plan to tell you when it's someone's birthday."
"We are bad parents. None of our children will be planned, will they?"
"Probably not." She giggled, kissing my cheek.
In the corner of my eye I could see a little toddler stepping into the kitchen. Jamie walked over to us, tugging at my jeans.
"Cake!" He demanded.
"Should we tell him?" I mumbled to Dakota.
"Let's tell him before he goes to sleep later."
"Alright kiddo, time for cake." I said and grabbed him.
He squealed as I lifted him up high in the air, placing him on my shoulders. Within a second he pulled in my hair as Dakota lit the candles on his cake. We left the room together and people started singing when we entered the living room. I sat down in the couch with Jamie in my lap and Dakota placed the cake on the table. Jamie clapped his little hands and cheered for himself.
"Blow out the candles, sweetie." Dakota told him.
I leaned us both forward and had to help him because mostly he just spat everywhere.
A couple of minutes later Sebastian handed Jamie a plate, which I had to hold onto. Jamie grabbed his spoon from the table and didn't hesitate to dig it into the cake.
