"GET AWAY FROM ME!"

It kills me to know that I've hurt her this badly. It hurts even more to hear her usually sweet, soft voice yelling at me as though it's her last day on Earth.

I keep my hands up in front of me, trying to protect myself from her rage while also trying to get her to hear me out.

As I take a couple more steps towards her, she takes a couple of steps backwards.

"DON'T YOU TAKE ANOTHER STEP CLOSER!"

Even though it is the stupidest thing I could possibly do, I continue to ignore what she's saying and just keep moving closer to her very slowly and cautiously.

I can hear some of the Gladers whispering to each other outside of our shared hut, trying to figure out what's going on.

"LEAVE ME ALONE!"

All I want is for her to stop screaming at me, to listen for just a couple of seconds so I can at least attempt to explain why I did what I did.

I keep my voice low and as soothing as possible as I say, "Baby, please just lis-"

"DON'T EVER CALL ME THAT AGAIN!"

Somebody knocks on the door, probably Newt or Alby.

"Don't come in!" I hate that how calm her voice sounds when she yells at whoever is outside compared to how much fury it's filled with when she yells at me.

"Just let me ex-"

"SHUT UP!"

I can tell that she's been holding back tears, but now she just lets them roll down her cheeks like it's nothing. But it's not nothing, it's absolutely everything. I never wanted to make her cry.

I take more steps, getting as close to her as I can. Unfortunately, I don't notice her hand moving closer to her pocket with each step I take.

Once I'm within two feet of her, she pulls a rather large knife out of her pocket and holds it out in front of her, looking as though she might actually stab me.

I immediately take three large steps away from her, not feeling it worth it to risk my life.

She stares at me with the saddest look I have ever seen written across her features before shoving the knife up the sleeve of her shirt, blood quickly beginning to seep through the thin fabric.

She then slams the door open and sprints out of the hut, straight towards the Homestead.

I want to follow her, but I just don't have the energy. Fighting with her takes up a lot of energy. Instead, I throw myself down on the bed and lie there wishing that she would come back and let me explain.

Newt walks into the hut and sits down next to me, placing his hand on top of mine.

"I'm sorry I let you do it, I know I should've resisted."

With that, he stands back up and leaves me alone again.

I continue to lie there, staring up at the ceiling. I can faintly hear people banging on a door in the distance and many loud, high pitched screams. Then the sound of the door breaking fills my ears and complete silence follows it.

A couple of minutes later, Alby walks up to the still open door of the hut and glares at me with so much hatred that I can practically feel the heat of his stare burning into my skin.

"You are the reason she's dead."

I guess that our love was ephemeral, just like her life.
