After a week of limited sleep due to helping Leo and Hephaestus work on the ship, once we got sailing again, I hit the hay. I slept for what seemed like ten years. I would've slept longer if it wasn't for the banging on my door.
"Come on, sleepyhead! You've been sleeping for almost two days now! Get up!" Coach Hedge screamed from outside my door. Two days? Why would they let me sleep that long? I jumped out of bed, still tired, and slipped on some jeans and a New Rome shirt. I walked to the breakfast room, assuming it was breakfast. There was no one there, so I walked to the top of the ship, and everyone was about their own business. I saw Piper, and walked up to her.
"Hey Sleeping Beauty." She joked.
I flashed her a playful grin. "What was that?" I asked.
She walked up to me and gently pecked my lips. "I missed you. Percy's been dying for you to wake up so he doesn't have to be the only one in charge and be able to get some rest."
"Why'd you let me sleep for two and a half days?" I asked. I thought they would've needed my help.
"You deserved it. And needed it. Everyone could tell by the time the boat was finished that you were at your wits end. But hey, it all paid off."
"That it did, Beauty Queen." I replied. And it really had. The ship was beautiful. And Hephaestus had given us a magical border, somewhat like Camp Half Blood, so that it's not so easily destroyed.
After a couple minutes of talking, I turned to Piper. "Hey, where's Nico."
She gave me her questioning look. "In his bunk. Will you ever tell me what made you guys become so close?"
"I've told you already, Pipes. We worked things out, talked about our past. And I guess I was more open to him than anyone else had ever been before, so we talked more often, and turns out, we have a lot in common." I hated lying to her, but I swore never to tell anyone Nico's secret. And I wouldn't. Not even to Piper.
"Right." She sighed.
I walked down to Nico's bunk, and opened the door without knocking. I was just about to say something when I saw something in his hand. It looked like a stick. No. Wider than a stick.
Then I realized. It was Franks life source. "Nico-" I started, too shocked to say anything else. He quickly stuck it in his pocket.
"Jason! Hey you're up! How was your nap?"
"Nico, what did you just stick in your pocket?" I asked him, slowly and quietly.
"Oh that?" He laughed, "that was nothing. Just a part of the old ship I kept for old times sake." I could tell by the look in his eyes he knew that I had already figured out what it was. "Please, Jason, I just wanted to keep it to protect him."
I shook my head. "And you think Hazel's not capable?"
"No, that's not what I meant. Look, Jason, it's a way to get my sister back. A soul for a soul. You should understand. Wouldn't you do the same for Thalia If she ever...you know-"
"I wouldn't take my friends life for it." I said, interrupting him. "Nico, I want you to give that back to Hazel, and explain what you did."
"I can't do that, Jason. Hazel would never forgive me." He glared at me.
"Well, I guess you should have thought of that before you took it." Lightning flickered in my palm. "Nico, you're like a brother to me. I don't want to hurt you. But if you don't give that back immediately-"
Nico cut me off by stepping towards me. "Okay. I will. I'll give it back. I'm sorry." We were so close I could feel his breath. Then, faster than light, he touched my temple and whispered a spell, "κοιμηθώ μέχρι ξύπνησε από μένα" I could tell it was Greek, and I could translate it a little after being at a Greek camp for a while.
He had cast a spell that would make me sleep until awakened by no one other than him.
Green mist engulfed me and I fell paralyzed into darkness, wondering if I would ever be awakened, my eyes wide. I saw him grinning, but his eyes were scared. His eyes showed that he was still only a young teen, living in a world of evil. The only word I could stutter out was "Nico-" before everything went blank.
