"Yang, seriously, you've done so much for me today. You don't need to treat me to dinner!"
"Get in the car Ruby. I can still take everything back to the moving van!"
The redhead sighed, taking her sister's order and stepping into the proffered position in the car. She shut the door with a light clap, and the car shot off. "Yang!" Ruby cried, "I don't even have my seatbelt on!"
"Sounds like a personal problem!" Yang replied, her hair flowing in the wind. "If you really think you'll go flying out, close the roof!"
Ruby pouted and clicked her seatbelt as they approached the downtown district, the afternoon lights shining brightly, trying desperately to outshine the sun behind them. The lights seemed to shimmer in the hot sun as the car flew by them, engine roaring on the nearly empty road. The top sign seemed not to exist as Yang barreled through the intersection.
"Yang, you just ran a stop sign!" Ruby pouted, "I don't want a ticket the first night here!"
"Did anything happen? Besides, you're not the one driving." Yang laughed, "But I will slow down if you want."
"Yes please! I'd like you to slow down!"The car slowly stopped in front of a bar, giving Ruby the shivers. "Yang you know I don't drink."
"But I do, and this place has amazing food. Just trust me on this one, Rubes."
Yang hopped over the car door and rounded the front, leaning on the mirror. "You coming?"
The two entered the bar, the quiet ding of the bell barely pervading the ruckus inside. There were only two empty seats at a table in the far corner, with the paint nearby peeling to reveal the dirty drywall underneath. Ruby tried to maneuver her way towards the table silently while Yang followed behind her, her bright blonde hair sticking out like a sore thumb in the dark room. As the two took their seats, a waitress came immediately to them. Her snowy hair was tied into a loose, sideways ponytail that looked to have a reddish dyed tip.
"Welcome to the Adel Bar, what sort of menu would you two like?" She asked, "We have alcoholic and non-alcoholic bev-"
"I've been here before, don't worry. Could I get a strawberry sunrise, and a chocolate milk for my sister?" Yang interrupted, "Both on the rocks."
"Yes, of course." She replied, "I'll be back."
Ruby glanced back at the waitress, waiting until she was out of earshot. "Yang, that was rude! You don't interrupt waiters in the middle of their monologue, don't you remember Dad saying that?"
"As I remember, Uncle Qrow taught us to be a free spirit. He's more admirable, to be honest. Have you seen him swordfight?"
"Stop changing topics!"
"So Downtown Vale, what made you choose here out of all places to move?"
Ruby let out a deep sigh, "There are a lot of job opportunities, and the culinary school is within walking distance of my apartment. This is the third time I've told you."
"You know what they say about Downtown Vale, right? Oops, waitress 12 o' clock."
The waitress set the two glasses down on the table, being careful with Yang's glass. Ruby glanced at the waitress' nametag: Weiss, it said.
"Thank you Miss Weiss!" Ruby chirped, raising up the milk in a fake salute.
"Please, Weiss is just fine. I don't believe I'm that much older than you." Weiss replied, a warm smile on her face. It seemed to disappear instantly the moment the man behind her started to talk.
"Weiss, another round on me!" The man yelled, slamming his mug down onto the table. Ruby could swear her own table moved from the force.
"Coming right up, sir!" Weiss sang, putting on an obviously fake smile. "Just don't drink too much, it's not even sundown yet!"
"There are two things in life I can deal with, liquor and women. Lucky for me, you supply both!" The man chuckled, nudging his friend's shoulder.
"Yang, I see why you like bars so much now." Ruby sighed, "You can be as much of a free spirit as you like."
"Anyways, back to the topic at hand. You know what they say about Downtown Vale right?"
"Not a clue." She replied, sipping her chocolate milk.
"They say whoever moves here meets their soulmate within a week of arrival. Whether a bump on the sidewalk or trapped in an elevator, they say Downtown Vale is the love capital of Remnant!" Yang gleamed, "Or maybe the person is the waiter or waitress at the local bar! I saw you peeking, don't lie."
"I was looking at her nametag, you dirty... er... lamppost!"
"Lamppost? Sis this whole no cursing thing is really not doin' it for ya."
"I'm being my own free spirit, refusing to curse." Ruby said as she opened the menu in front of her, "Now what do I want to eat?"
