"Karou?" The young girl asked the boy standing before her. He smiled and looked at the note in his hand, shaking his head.
"No, you put the note on my desk by mistake. And I thought I'd let you know that Karou is actually interested in another girl right now."
"Oh. I see." Odd. Usually when he says that, the girl shows extreme disappointment and sadness. But with this one, she only seems a bit disappointed, but also indifferent.
"Your letter was very nice, though. And you are pretty cute. I'd definitely take you out. Would you rather date me instead?"
The girl smiled, and chills ran up his spine. Something about that smile seemed familiar. "Thanks, but since Karou is the one I like, I should wait until I have his attention rather than quickly switch my affections to his, seemingly, completely identical twin," She cocked her head to the side, as though curious while her smile grew mischievous. "I'm sure you've already had girls do that to you, so you and your brother punish them by toying with their feelings and humiliating them. Honestly, that's a bit cruel, especially when you two always intentionally make it difficult to tell you apart and push away anyone who tries to get close to you. That's like giving someone hot tea, and getting mad at them for blowing on it to make it easier to drink. Don't you agree, Karou?"
The boy stared in shock, completely caught off guard. What is going on? This has never happened before!
"What's the matter? Can't remember which twin you are?" The girl taunted, placing her hands on her hips and smirking. She then looked over his shoulder. "Come on out, Hikaru. You might want to hear exactly how you and your brother were foiled."
Karou turned to see Hikaru come out from behind a nearby tree and join the pair, his astonished face reflecting his own perfectly. The girl pushed a lock of curly hair behind her ear as she began her explanation. "I'm not sure if you were aware of this, but you two managed to create a pattern with your usual heart-breaker routine. The original receiver of the love letter will approach her, lie about which one he was, and ask if she'd rather date the other twin. After she says yes, he'd turn around and reveal that he was the twin she originally wanted to date, then you'd both proceed to hurt her feelings for not making up her mind about which twin she wanted to date. And to top off all the humiliation, you laugh at the poor girl as you tear up her love letter. It's the same way every time. Almost clockwork."
"W-what do you want with us?" Karou asked, stuttering for the first time in years.
"Nothing but to see your faces as you watch your routine get demolished, and to ask you to stop being such bullies. If you keep being mean to girls who are still trying to figure out which of you is which, then you'll never get them to like you. And if you keep being horrible to your peers, then you'll never make dependable friends." The girl looked over her shoulder and whistled a short tune. "While we're at it, why don't you try playing your own game?"
The boys looked behind the girl, and saw another coming to join them. She shared the same face, body, and dark brown uniform as the other. Both had turquoise eyes, brown hair, ivory skin, and a mischievous smirk. The first girl had curly hair, while the other had straight. The girls stood side by side, smiling as they spoke in unison, "We're Jenna and Emma Davidson. Can you tell which of us is Jenna, and which of us is Emma?"
The Hitachiin brothers' mouths dropped open, utterly speechless. After a long minute, Hikaru turned to Karou. "They're. . . like us!" he realized aloud.
"Almost, yes." His twin nodded in agreement.
The girls laughed and high-fived each other. "Who are you? Where did you come from?" the boys asked together.
"We're exchange students from England. Our father's company moved to Japan last year, so now we're here." The curly-haired twin answered.
"After being in school for a while, we heard a lot of things about the Hitachiin twins. About their pranks, the way they enjoy confusing everyone about who is which twin, and of course, the way they basically isolate themselves from anyone who dares to try getting close to them." The other one chimed in.
"That was when we decided, we had to meet our doppelgangers. Our one-in-a-million, twins of twins."
The boys stared in amaze. They really are us.
"So, this whole thing was a trap, a trick so you could meet us and show us who you are-" Hikaru started.
"And the love letter was just bait?" Karou finished for his brother.
In unison, the girls shrugged nonchalantly and replied, "Pretty much."
"Are you two going to be like this forever, just like we plan to be?"
Karou didn't know why he asked that question, but it was out of his mouth before he could stop it. Emma and Jenna looked at each other, also surprised by the question, then turned back to the boys.
"No. One day, we're going to have to come to an understanding with what makes each of us individual. When that day comes, we'll let our differences come to light, and people will get to know us as Emma and Jenna rather than as the Davidson twins." The straight-haired girl explained.
"We're embracing our alikeness until we find what makes us different from each other. Until that day comes, we'll just enjoy confusing our family, friends, and acquaintances. We'll see where things lead us in the future." The girl with curly hair added.
"Speaking of which, we'd better get going before our parents start worrying about us."
"It was lovely to meet you both. We should hang out sometime."
The twin with straight hair swung one school bag over her shoulder, and handed the other to her sister. They turned around and walked a couple of yards before looking back at the boys. Still moving and speaking in unison, they waved and said, "See you later, Hitachiins."
************************************************************** Please remember, this is not my best work. I found the old storyline in one of my notebooks, so I thought I'd write it up and post it. I'll do my best to edit through it, but I can already tell that it isn't that good. Feedback would be appreciated!
