Just as Emma predicted, her sister avoided Karou. In fact, she didn't come to school for several days. Though multiple classmates noticed her absence and vocalized some concern, nobody was more worried than Karou. He texted and called her every day, but received no answer. He thought of going to her home to see her, make sure that she's okay. Unfortunately, he'd later anticipate that she'd probably send him away, and figured that she'd want some time alone.
"Just checking up on you (again). Are you okay, Jen? Let me know if there's anything you need." He texted as he walked towards his classroom with Hikaru.
"Any word?" The other Hitachiin asked.
"No. At this point, I'm not sure if she'll ever text me back."
"Maybe she just doesn't know what to say."
"You think so?"
The boys turned into their classroom and began greeting classmates casually. After a minute, a voice from the other side of the room made Karou freeze instantly.
"Thank you so much! I owe you one."
"Don't worry about it. Just return the notes once you're done with them, Jenna."
The young man whirled around and searched the crowd. Sure enough, the young Davidson was conversing with a female classmate. His heart leapt out of his chest as his mind began racing. She's finally come to school! But why hasn't she responded to my texts or returned my calls? I need to talk to her. But maybe I shouldn't approach her. What should I do?
"Hey, Davidson! Welcome back. Are you feeling better?"
Hikaru said cheerfully, walking over to her. Karou stared at him in shock. After regaining his briefly lost composure, he followed suit.
"I am, thanks. How are you, Hitachiin?" she smiled back at the ginger-haired brothers. Am I imagining it, or is she avoiding my gaze?
"We're great. Glad you're okay."
"Jen, can I talk to you for second?" Karou asked nervously.
Fear flashed across her face and disappeared just as suddenly at the sound of his question. She looked down and bit her lip. "Um, sure."
"Have you gotten any of my messages?" he asked quietly, remembering to not let anyone else hear him. He couldn't risk accidentally making a scene like at the Host Club last week.
"Uh, I'm afraid I turned off my phone and have forgotten to turn it back on. I'm sorry."
"Don't worry about it. People forget a lot of things all the time." She's lying. He didn't have any proof to back it up, but he just knew. "Um, can you-?"
RING!
The bell rang, indicating that class was supposed to begin. Jenna ducked away and took her seat. Karou reluctantly took his next to Haruhi, still gazing at her from a distance.
"Hey, are you okay?" Haruhi asked worriedly.
"Yeah. I think so." He answered. I just need to talk to her.
