The biggest surprise to Spider-Man was that, despite the commotion in the lab, there was no welcoming committee ready to greet them as they rounded the corner. The rest of the facility seemed undisturbed, quite frankly.
"I don't think anybody heard that." He said. "What happened in the lab, I mean."
"No, they heard it." Batman replied. "They were just told not to interfere just yet."
"Or they didn't hear and you're just being paranoid." Spidey remarked. Batman turned his head to him.
"That room wasn't sound proof- at least, not sound proof enough to contain the sounds of multiple desk being flung across the room, holes being made in walls and a contained explosion." He remarked.
"It's always a possibility..."
"But a very unlikely one." The stopped at a door labelled 'surveillance'.
"This looks promising." Peter nodded his head, and Batman kicked the door so hard it got knocked off its frame and landed on the ground with a loud thud. They stepped in- it was dark, dimly lit. There were a few computers around the room, and a large glass window overlooking some sort of cell block.
"Guess we know where they stored all of the other test subjects, huh?" Peter looked down through the window. "Y'think this is all of them?"
"All except the primary subject." Batman said, examining a computer. "We have to be cautious- I doubt this security room was empty for no reason."
"Right you are." A voice said from behind them, and two large electric blasts him them both in the chests, sending them sprawling backwards and through the glass, and they rolled across the floor, the test subjects in their cells cheering. Unlike any other source of damage, the electricity seemed to linger, Spidey noticed.
"I see you got through Bane." their assailant grinned. He was wearing a yellow and blu armoured suit, with a completely yellow mask. It had lightning strikes sprouting up from above the eye slits, and a blue electricity pattern across the entire suit. "He talks big, but when there's a contest as to who can take out the Batman AND the Spider-Man... well, nobody can beat ME!" And he hit them both with another round of lightning, this one longer and more painful. The electricity lingered properly around the suit, sparks dashing around Peter's armoured suit at incredible speeds. With his struggling hand, he reached for the button on the back of his armour and clicked it. The armoured suit simply slipped off, but the mask remained, giving him a major headache. He ignored it, and he pounced upwards at their assailant in his standard red suit, kicking him in the chest. The electricity-themed man staggered backwards.
"And who is 'me', exactly?" Spidey commented, taking off the armoured mask and quickly slipping on his normal red one. He quickly turned around to Batman, who was still on his knees, ripping the armour off- the electricity was lingering on his armour a lot more than Peter's. He turned back to their assailant.
"I'm ELECTRO!" The man screamed, sending another blast straight at him. He dodged it and put on his spare web shooters.
"You... you what?!" Peter laughed. Electro glared.
"Don't you laugh at me! I'll have you fried in the minute!" He yelled, turning around and blasting all of the cell doors open. A variety of prisoners jumped out, all of them going for Batman. "That's right- the bug is mine!"
Spidey jumped at him, webbing his shoulder and flinging across the room. "Arachnids! Spiders are arachnids, Electrone. Electroke? Elektra?"
"You won't be making jokes once your brain has melted!"
"Really depends, I've got a few puns about melting ready to go, so I'm good."
He sprinted across the wall, electricity blasts barely missing him. He attached a web to the ceiling and swung off, kicking a man in a rhino suit along the way. He rolled across the floor and ran to the pile which Batman was under. A prisoner grabbed him from behind and held him for Electro.
"He's all yours, Electro." The man said. Something seemed off about him. Peter turned his head a bit and widened his eyes.
"You're a crocodile?!" He exclaimed. "An actual crocodile man?"
"Shut it!" The man snarled.
"Man, you're ugly. I mean, even for a crocodile you're an ugly one." He continued. The crocodile man roared, and lifted up a fist.
"No, Croc, what are you doing?!" Electro shouted, but it was too late. Spidey's right arm was free and he webbed Croc's face. In the confusion, Croc dropped his other arm, and Spidey rolled under his legs, an electricity blast hitting Croc directly in the chest, knocking him to the ground. Another man flew over Spidey's head screaming, right before slamming into the wall. He looked over, and saw Batman throwing people off him, taking bits of armour off and hitting people in the face with the pieces. A scarred man with a knife ran up behind him, but Spidey webbed his knife away and Batman hit him across the jaw. There were only three prisoners left- two of which had Batman surrounded. The third was a woman in a black combat uniform, a bo staff on her back. She ran at Spider-Man, launching a fist at his face. He went to block it, but she pulled it away- a feign. Her real attack came from her foot hitting his knee, and then her other foot hitting him in the face.
He staggered back, regaining his footing. She sent a slap for his face which he successfully blocked, and then flipped her over his head in one swift motion. She rolled across the floor, surprised- she underestimated his strength. She prepared for another round, but a man in a bird costume was thrown into her back by Batman, which rendered them both unconscious.
Electro blasted the floor, sending him flying towards them. He landed on both of his feet, and spurts of electricity began building up in his palms. Batman and Spider-Man looked at each other- Batman preparing a Batarang in his hand, Spider-Man getting in a fighting stance.
"Neither of you are any match against me!" Electro said. "My place will be protector of Earth!"
"Dream away." Batman replied, throwing a Batarang at his face. Electro blasted it, but as soon as he did the Batarang blew up and a cloud of smoke erupted, enveloping Electro in the cloud. Seeing an opening, Spidey dashed over across to Electro, grabbed him and threw him into a wall. He then shot a line of web, and pulled him towards Batman. Batman ran over, jumped into the air and kicked him across the face. He landed on both of his feet and threw a couple of shock Batarangs. As soon as they impacted, Electro's suit buzzed visibly with electricity, Electro tensing in pain.
Batman and Spider-Man looked over at each other, each of them having the same idea. Electro was on one knee, quickly recovering.
"I'll make a net," Spidey said, "You'll know what to do when you see it. Just keep him distracted until I spin it." Batman nodded, and ran at Electro, tackling him back to the floor. Spidey turned on the electric webbing Batman had made for him almost a year prior, and fired two webs at the walls in his right and his left. He kept on firing connected webs and tied them together in the middle, making a large net. Electro was up again- Batman had been sent into the wall. Their assailant walked up to Spidey, creating more electricity in his palms.
"What's this? A cute little contraption- hoping to catch me, were you?" Electro smirked. "Good effort I suppose. Hold on, no it wasn't. You heroes are so overrated..."
He shot a large ball of electricity at the net, intending on breaking it. The electricity instead built on it, sending tingles down Peter's arm. Electro frowned, and fired another strike, and the same happened again. He continued with strike after strike, the net building up more and more electricity and the pain in Spidey's arms getting more and more painful. He grimaced, taking it all in.
The net had soon built up enough energy, and Batman took the opening. Electro roared, but was cut short as Batman kicked him so hard in the back he went flying forwards , and directly into the heavily electrified net. He screamed in pain, Batman turning on predator vision and using the heart rate monitor on it. After a few seconds, Batman signalled to let go, and Spidey did so. The net fell in half, and Electro fell to the floor in a heap, groaning.
"Wait, he's still conscious? How?" Peter asked, frowning, rubbing his arms.
"The armour must've absorbed a lot of the electricity, as that's what it was designed for." Batman explained, walking over to Electro.
"Unlike OUR suits." Spidey commented, and Batman glared at him.
Batman grabbed Electro and shoved him against the wall. "The pain you just felt? I can do worse." He bellowed. "Where is the main test subject?!"
"It's in the... the old generator room." Electro struggled to say. Batman snarled.
"The science team leader. His name, tell me!" he demanded. Electro opened his mouth to speak, but he frowned. His frown was quickly replaced with a look of terror, as he started clawing at his head.
"No, god!" He screamed. "God, please, stop it! It burns!" He continued screaming, until he suddenly dropped his head. Batman let go of him and stepped away.
"What the hell was that?!" Peter exclaimed.
"My guess is someone remotely fried his brain." Batman explained. "To stop him from revealing too much."
"The science team leader?"
"Probably." Batman nodded.
"So, we're going to the old generator room then?" Spidey guessed.
"Yes, we are. Time to find their pride and glory."
