The two approached a door labelled 'command centre. The door was steel for the most part, with a key card required to open the door. There was a tinted window on the top of the door, with bright flashing lights emanating from behind the glass. Spidey looked at Spawn.
"Ready?" Peter asked. Spawn said nothing, only proceeding to grab the doorframe with his bare hands and starting to pull on it. Then, all of a sudden- it opened for them. Spawn tilted his head to the left, and the two looked at each other. They walked in cautiously. The bright lights were now clearly sparks of electricity, coming from behind a drawn tarp. Behind the same tarp was the silhouette of a man in a lab coat. It was clear from the posture of the man that he was working on something- therefore creating the sparks. The two continued to sneak up behind the man, who had taken off his lab coat and was now putting whatever he was working on onto his back. A sharp jabbing sound was made, followed by a wince from the man. Spawn was about to reach for the tarp, when a long mechanical tendril struck him, sending him flying a few feet back. Another tendril tore down the railing holding up the tarp, revealing whoever was behind the curtain.
The man seemed to be in his late thirties, dressed in green combat armour. He wore glasses on his rounded, plump head, along with a bowl cut. There were four mechanical arms coming from his back now, all of them operating individually. Spider-Man shot a web at him, but a tendril held itself in front of him, catching the web and slinging him towards the man. Another arm swiped him across the face, and dropped him to the floor.
"Gentlemen." The man said, "You made it far, no doubt. You made it through my army of Metahumans. You turned my greatest work and Earth's greatest hope into an emotional, undead creature.
"You were forcing him to fight against his will!" Spidey answered.
"There's no time for decisions, Spider- especially when such a being with immense power like this exists, Spider-Man. We cannot let a spawn of the devil decide what's best for Earth's survival."
At this, Spawn roared, and jumped at him. One tendril held him up whilst the other grabbed his right wrist- together, they threw him against the wall. Spawn got back up almost immediately, but a tendril shot towards him, gripping his neck. It then began electrocuting him, blue sparks flying out of the tentacle.
"Otto Octavius will be the one to save this Earth, using my greatest creation yet." He sneered, dropping Spawn. He gasped for air, clutching his neck. Whatever voltage Octavius had hit him with, it was certainly a match for his healing factor.
"You were never going to use the other subjects to fight, were you?" Spider-Man said, leaping into the air, slinging a web and swinging across the room towards him. One tendril tracked him, began striking at him. Spidey dodged out of the way of it in midair, sensing the second one coming from behind him right at the last second. He shot another web at the other end of the room and pulled himself over there, landing on the wall. "They were your early test runs."
"No." Otto replied with a hint of truth in his voice. "They certainly had a place in defending the world, but yes, they were early tests in preparation for Simmons." He strode over to Spidey, using the bottom two tendrils to make his way over there. The two top tentacles started changing- one of them began spinning rapidly, the other ejecting flames from itself. The spinning blade tendril lunged at him, digging into the wall when Peter jumped to the side. The flamethrower began bursting fire at him, which he only narrowly avoided.
Behind him, Spawn got to one knee again, groaning. He pointed at Octavius, and a chain sped towards him. The bladed tentacle, however, quickly went to the defence, turning into a craned arm and grabbed the chain before it could reach him. Spawn pulled on the chain, sending Otto flying towards him. Spawn prepared an energy blast, but a tendril struck him across the face before he could, and another shoving him into the wall. The other two propped themselves on the ground, putting him back on balance. He sneered.
"My arms can predict anything that comes my way." He laughed. "Not even Spider-Man and the Spawn of the Devil can defeat me! Nothing you can throw at me cannot be countered!"
"Maybe." Spawn said. "Maybe we're too predictable for you. Maybe you've calculated every move we can make. Maybe we can't do anything without bringing this whole lab down on us, like you've planned."
"Indeed. Is that... defeat I sense there?" Otto smiled, a tendril catching Spider-Man's flying-kick by grabbing his leg and throwing him into the same wall as Spawn.
"But in all that planning, seeing us coming towards you down the corridor..." Spidey continued. "You planned for everything two super-powered individuals can throw at you. But you forgot one thing... well, two."
Octavius' smile dropped and he raised an eyebrow. "What...?"
Under his mask, Spidey smiled. "Firstly... there are three of us."
From a vent above them, Batman dropped onto Octavius. The tentacles soon propped him back up, snapping at him. Two Batarangs flew towards Otto's face, which two tentacles blocked. Batman followed that up by kicking him in the chest, then punching him across the face. Otto stumbled backwards, all four tendrils snapping at him now. Batman backwards flipped away from them, landing in front of Spawn and Spider-Man.
"And secondly, you didn't prepare for HIM." Spidey finished. He stood up and looked at Batman. "Sure took your time though."
"Security was a little tighter than I thought." Batman answered. "Who is he?"
"Otto Octavius, he said. I haven't heard of him before- I would've remembered a name like that. The jokes just write themselves. Like Doctor Octo-"
"Enough." Batman held his hand up to stop him. Spawn stood up beside him. "You ready?" Al turned his head to him, crunching his knuckles.
"This son of a bitch won't be getting back up after this." Spawn said coldly. Batman and Spider-Man looked at each other, eyebrows raised. Spawn raised his chains into the air. Batman took out a Batarang. Spider-Man got into a fighting stance.
"No killing." Batman reminded him.
Spawn ignored him. He sent his chains towards Otto, making them spiral to avoid being caught by the tendrils again. Octavius realised what he was doing, and simply whacked them away with his tentacles.
Batman threw the Batarang, and just as Octavius was getting ready to slice it in half, he pressed a button on his belt, making the Batarang explode in a flash of light, stunning him. Spider-Man slung across the room, and right-crossed Otto across the face. The scientist stumbled back into the wall, regaining his senses. Spawn strode across to him. Octavius slowly sent a tendril after him, his senses still coming back to him. Spawn effortlessly grabbed the tentacle, and crushed it in his hand. Another one came for him, which he ducked. He then grabbed Octavius by the shoulder, spun him around, and tore the device straight off his back.
The tentacles instantly dropped, completely motionless. Spawn threw them on the floor, crushing them under his foot. He then turned back to Octavius, who was cowering into the wall, his hands in front of his face in defence.
"Spawn." Batman said, steadily walking towards him. Spawn didn't look at him.
He grabbed Otto by the neck and lifted him into the air. His eyes began burning up again, in an even brighter green. The flames flickered out of his eyes as he stared at the helpless scientist. He was going to burn him with his eyes.
"Al... don't." Batman continued. Spawn still paid no attention to him. The room was quiet, all apart from Otto's grunts and groans. Spawn looked deeply into his eyes, studying him. His eyes then stopped burning, and he dropped him to the floor.
"We're done here." Spawn said gravely, brushing past Batman. "Arrest him and the other abominations in this place."
Octavius let out a single laugh. The three turned to him.
"Don't thi... don't think you're getting out of here alive... not at the least with my projects..." He managed to get out, before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a detonator.
He clicked it.
