It’s June now and school is coming to an end soon. The last couple of weeks all I’ve done is eat, sleep, and study. There wasn’t room for anything else. I had finals and failing just wasn’t an option. Now that they were coming to an end, I could finally relax and enjoy the last few weeks of school before summer vacation.
As for my social life, everything seemed to have quieted down. My fight with Colton was news of the past. Although it did spread quickly, before the end of the day everyone seemed to have heard about it. Lucky for me everyone was able to figure out the story for themselves. This saved me the trouble of explaining what had happened between the two of us. Colton and I haven’t spoken since, not that I really cared. I was better off staying away from him. Lately I’ve just gone back to what my friends refer to as “single Skyler”. I had my little things with a few guys but it wasn’t ever anything serious.
I haven’t heard a word from Austin, which didn’t really surprise me. We didn’t ever really talk to each other. All the times I had been around him weren’t really planned, they just kind of happened. Every once in a while I would think of him. It wouldn’t be for too long, maybe just a minute or two. But either way he had made his way into my thoughts.
My main mind-set has been to live in the moment. Next year I would be a senior and my life would be forever changed after that. This would be the last summer I could get away with being carefree.
At school we had planned a junior skip day despite all of the seniors’ complaints. They were just mad because theirs had been a flop. But hey that wasn’t our fault so we went ahead and decided our skip day would be this Friday. None of us wanted to do the whole generic let’s just throw a big party thing. We wanted something more interesting, so when this kid named Matt suggested we all go up to his lake house we jumped at the idea. The plan was to go up there Thursday night. There was gonna be a huge bonfire, fireworks on the lake and of course alcohol. Matt’s lake house was gigantic so he invited us all to stay the night too.
Basically this lake house trip was what got us all through this week of school. By the time Thursday came we were all literally counting down the minutes until the last bell rang to dismiss us for the day.
Before going to Matt’s I was going to stop home to get my things and get my car. Kenzie and I had figured it would be easier for us to just car pool instead of both of us driving individually. Matt’s lake house wasn’t too far from mine actually. It was on the same lake, just a different part. And because of this I was the one driving us there, I knew the way so I didn’t mind.
* * *
As we pulled into Matt’s driveway we saw that there was already a decent amount of cars already. Most people car pooled just like Kenzie and I had. We made our way inside and were immediately greeted by Matt.
“Hey guys! Glad you could make it, you can take your stuff upstairs and then we’re all gonna get the bonfire going soon.” He said after giving each of us a hug.
We smiled and then went upstairs to claim a room for ourselves. As we were searching we found Lexi and Bri, they had found a room for all four of us to stay in. We threw our stuff in the room and then went down to join everyone else.
Everyone that was there made their way to the fire pit. Matt got the fire going and someone put on some music too. All of us were sitting around the fire telling stories and just having a good time.
As time went on more and more people showed up and joined us by the fire. I kid you not when I say pretty much the entire grade came. It didn’t surprise me at all though considering Matt was hosting. Matt was just one of the likeable people, he got along with everyone. Besides being a people person he’s our class president, our star football player, and the valedictorian. He has everything going for him and it’s safe to say he’s loved by everyone.
