Mackenzie's P.O.V
Over the weekend I stayed home and every time I checked my phone, I would see messages from Luke or receive voice mails from Tyler. I didn't know what to do with either of them, so I just left them unanswered. Now I have to deal with seeing them in person.
I left my room after I tied my doc martens and with a sigh, stared out the window. "Here goes nothing." I say to myself and head downstairs.
My parents are always up early, so I see them before I go to school. Halfway through the hall leading to the dining room I could hear the birds chirping and I wasn't extra chipper today.
"Good morning, sweetie." Dad said quite normally as he read the newspaper before he sipped his coffee.
"Good morning." I replied trying to sound okay. I grabbed an apple and a bottle of water, because on days like this I needed to rush.
"How are you feeling, Kenz?" mom replies without taking her eyes of the chopping board and the array of vegetables she was cutting.
"I'm fine, Mom."
Dad told mom about Tyler the other night and she knew that I wouldn't want to talk about it the next morning, so she chose her words carefully. I went to her and kissed her cheek so I could go.
"I have to go now. Do I ride with you or walk?" I ask my dad, who seemed fixated in his paper.
"You can go ahead, just stay on the sidewalk and--"
"Make sure to not get lost. I know. Bye." I said hurriedly in a singsong voice.
"Honey, I think you should get going too. You're the principal." mom said to him and fixed up the table
"I know." He took one last sip of coffee, grabbed the car keys and kissed mom on the cheek.
It's Monday. A Monday. That means school. School means avoiding Tyler, explaining to Heather and figuring out Luke's intentions.
Sunlight flittered through the window shades, alarming me that I was running late. I grabbed my bad and half-jogged out the door.
The leaves of the trees swayed as I walked on the concrete, showing that the wind was quite strong today.
I bit from the apple and after a few more bites I took a swig of water and threw the apple in one of the sidewalk trash bins. I reached the corner of the block and from there I could see the school, which was about two to three blocks away.
My phone started ringing and I decided to ignore it, because I knew it would either be Luke or Tyler. It rang for the second time around and I dug through my pockets to get my phone. Without checking the caller ID, I immediately answered.
"Look, I don't know what your deal is, so why don't you just run along and--"
"Well, someone sounds excited to see me." A familiar voice said. It was Heather.
"I'm sorry, it's just that--" My chest sunk and I stopped from there. I realized I didn't tell her about last Friday night yet.
"I know what happened. It's just really messed up and you need to explain the whole story to me again." A sigh of relief came out from me, followed by her famous laugh.
"Alright, but who did you hear it from?" It was inevitable for the story to spread around the school, so I wasn't very shocked people knew about it. In fact, I was bummed but I didn't sound so upset about it.
"Liv Harrison." Liv is Luke's older sister. Go figure. I didn't have any problem with her knowing about it because 1) she is Luke's sister 2) Luke was bound to tell and 3) She gives the best advice.
