Tyler's P.O.V

The last subject for today was Chemistry and this period was specifically for knowing who our partners were going to be. Hopefully I get someone useful. Someone I can count on in terms of paperwork. And I know what you're thinking, that I'm shallow and inconsiderate.

But what I really mean is that I like mixing the substances more. I do the procedures more than analyzing and taking down the findings. Call me a nerd or whatever, but I'll stick to that routine.

"Today, you will know who your partners are. And I will give you your first assignment as a pair afterwards." Mrs. O' Connell said as she strutted into the classroom before even greeting us. Her fiery auburn hair bobbed up and down until she reached the platform. In her hands was a sheet of paper. The names of students and their pairs were on there, I figured. It didn't take long until she started calling out people and their partners. From the looks on their faces I could see that some were fairly unimpressed with their partners, and the others were too excited.

There were about five pairs left, and my name wasn't called out yet. "Phoebe Richmond and Tyson Kingsley..." there goes one out of five, "Dana Fay and Drew West..." two out of five, "Alli Kenan and Cameron Sandford..." there weren't many names left. There were just four people, to be exact. This was the only class Mackenzie, Luke, and I seem to share. That's a relief, because I can't stick around with all the awkward tension. So anyways, there are three of us. That leaves Tara Shields.

After a few seconds, the four of us will be paired up and it will definitely not be in a random order. I feel like I was put in this situation for a particular reason. And that was to torture me.

If I ended up with either three of them, I know I'd still have a hard time. Or that's just how I'm thinking.

"Luke Harrison and Tara Shields..." Luke smacks his forehead, loud enough for everyone except his partner to hear. Meanwhile, Tara tries to fix up and seem not too eager. How ironic.

"The last pair is Mackenzie Greene and Tyler Parker." Go figure, Mrs. O' Connell! I can basically sense that she thinks this is some kind of joke. I mean, come on. The whole school knows that Mackenzie and I are history. She hates my guts now. Speaking of guts, I think I might just barf them out.

Now I'm on the verge of laughing hysterically, because what bothers me most is that I've been paired up with Mackenzie. How do I deal with this? She hates me! She'll leave the entire paperwork to me as punishment, that's for sure. The fact that I'll be sitting beside her for half an hour the whole period drives me nuts already.

"I think everyone should get settled down before I give out the assignment. So, please head to your stations and patiently wait for your handouts." Mrs. O' Connell tells everyone. This couldn't possibly get any worse. I put my head down on the desk and wail quietly in my seat like a dying sea mammal.

I felt Mackenzie's silhouette tower over me so I scooted over and she took a seat beside me but stayed a few inches farther than usual. I stopped wailing secretly and lifted my head, just as Mrs. O' Connell passes our table and gives her the piece of paper. She slides it across the desk and looks the other way. Yep, I was left with the paperwork. I deserved it anyway.

A few people were chatting about what to do, or at least they looked like they were. It looked like Tara was sharing another one of her cheerleading squad memories as co-captain with Luke and man, is she annoying him. Heather's the better captain and you don't see her bragging about it. He yawns and looks anywhere but at Tara's face. I don't blame him though.

Now a lot of our classmates were discussing, and I look over at Mackenzie, who was waiting for a word or something at least. We seemed to be the only pair that wasn't interacting.
