Taren took Emily to his arm and lifted her over his broad shoulder, unaware of her tears and her deafening grief toward her furry friend.
Another man, which Peter called Lyel, snatched Bree and threw her inside the thick-glass cubicle and locked the door. The force left the girl unconscious as her head bumped into the cold ground.
"Don't you hurt her!" Emily screamed, her voice hoarse as she tried to swallow her sobs. "Please, don't hurt her."
Peter briefly checked Bree. "She'll live. Just unconscious."
Taren was still clutching her over his shoulder, eyes blank. He was like a puppet, an invisible man controlling him, just like Lyel.
Just like every other prisoner inside that laboratory.
"Put her down, Taren," he ordered.
Taren put her down. Emily instantly distanced herself. Again, she backed away and bumped some of the tables, creating screeching sounds as she made a mess. Both Taren and Lyel cocked their heads to the left in unison, as if tuning out the high pitch tone.
As her back reached the cold wall, she breathed out, eyes scanning the closed place. She couldn't make a plan, not when her bestfriend was still locked up in one of the cubicles.
Her eyes met Peter's, fear morphed into hatred. "How could you do this?"
"It's nothing personal, Emily," he answered. "Just doing my job. Your father's job, to be exact."
"My dad's not capable of doing this."
Peter let out an outrageous laugh. "He's the one who started this. Your mother formulated the virus. Your father started with the experiment. Your godfather helped us at first but then he figured out that he's a coward and wanted to end this."
She shook her head. All this time, she still denied to herself that her father was the bad guy. But all the danger and chaos had led her to believe that, maybe, it was really her father's fault.
"I trusted you, Pete," she whispered.
He shrugged his shoulder. "You trusted the wrong man."
She began to sob, the terror and defeat crawled up her skin. She wanted nothing but to escape, to find a way out to all of this.
Emily looked at Taren. He was like a robot now, no feelings, no conscience, no mercy.
"You know, I should be the one getting mad at you for lying to me," Peter started, his voice full of poison. "You told me you didn't know anything about your father's experiment. Yet, when I hire someone to break into your house, they found clues that you're living with someone. A guy. I made it look like you are the one who broke into your own house to confuse them and I think it worked."
Emily's mind raced, remembering that incident. That was the first time as well that Taren had gone missing.
"Did you kill my father?" she asked.
Peter thought for a moment. He looked at Taren and Lyel, both were looking down on the ground.
"I have to, Emily," he finally answered. "I have to kill him. He wanted to end this project and I just can't let him."
Emily wanted to laugh that very moment. She wanted to kick herself for blaming everyone around her except this guy in front of her.
"Just a drop of this chemical can lead to massive heart attack," he said as he pointed to a blue liquid. "I can do the same with your friend, here."
