Chapter five
Matt
‘Hey man. You up for some outing today?’ Mason asked me once he succeeded waking me up early today. The sun wasn’t even up when he practically ambushed my sleep. But I didn’t take it personally. In fact, I was thrilled. But then, I remembered that Kristen will be here today, that’s what he said two days ago.
‘Sorry, man. I need to be in school today. But I’ll be here the whole afternoon. How’s that sound?’ I replied. I answered as the big brother to a sibling I had just now. The feeling’s foreign yet amazing. And I’ve been reminding myself everyday that my family, my immediate family was here and up until today, I couldn’t take a grasp on it completely.
‘Cool.’ He threw the pillow he grabbed earlier to wake me up. Mason was on his way outide my room when I asked him.
‘Hey, Mason.’ I just called him by his name. It’s cool. ‘Kristen will be here today, right?’ I asked. There was a sudden change on his facial expression. That part’s not so cool.
‘Yeah. She’s on her way, actually.’ He finally answered back. I had nothing else to say at that moment.
I went to school and rush all the requirements so that I can go home, as I promised to Mason earlier and we’ll hang out. And once I got home, we certainly did.
We didn’t go out. We didn’t know where to go, in the first place so we decided to just continue the battles- videogame battles. We were on a very tight competition when we both heard a familiar voice. ‘So, I’m out of the competition now, huh?’
It was Kristen.
Mason quickly drop his joysticks and gave Kristen a huge and tight welcome hug. As for me, I did nothing but stare at Kristen. I was stunned. She looks awesome. She grew up too. With her body hugged in a tight fitting white dress, she’s undeniably a lady now. A hot lady.
‘What’s with those scrutinizing eyes, Matty?’ Kristen asked me.
‘Oh, nothing.’ Then I got up from the couch and gave her a welcome hug too. ‘How did you get here with that dress?’ I inquired.
‘I have my ways.’ Then she winked at me. Oh, please, can somebody help me here. I couldn’t think straight. ‘It’s been years, Kris. It’s good to see you.’
‘I know. It’s great to see you too.’ She’s touching my back as if groping in the dark.
‘So, you’re a health buff now? She teased.
Please. Think of other things. Think of other things. Think of other things
‘Oh, come on. I work out just fine. Look at you, are you a cover girl now or something?’ I mocked back.
‘Nah, not really.’ She giggles when she answered back. Then we stare at each other, smiles flashing, and we sighed at the same time. That made us laugh hard.
‘It’s been like forever, Matty. It’s just really great to see you.’ She said again. The words give pleasure to my ears. It’s been years and I never forget about you, too, I thought. I didn’t say it. Mason and Kristen is a thing now. Come on.
Mason coughed then smiled at the two of us when we looked at where he stands. ‘Oh, I’m sorry, Mae.’ Mae? Did I hear her right? Kristen walked back to his side and opened her arms for a hug. And just when Mason is about to hug her too, she punched him hard in the stomach. ‘Okay, really? You’re jealous of that?’ she said with a swag. Then we all burst out laughing.
‘So, you’re Mae.’ I pronounced Mae with the most feminine voice I can utter. Then I laughed harder.
‘I told you to never call me that again. Ever.’ Mason said with fake anger.
‘What’s wrong with Mae? It sounds macho to me.’ Kristen defended.
‘Macho? ‘I practically shouted the word then laughed loudly. ‘Sorry man. It’s just that, your name’s very interesting, you know.’ I said to Mason.
‘Yeah, it’s cool, man.’ He answered quickly.
‘Yes, it’s cool.’ Then I paused. ‘And macho.’
Then the three of us broke into one loud guffaw.

We were eating dinner. Katherine prepared all the dishes and i must say, she got the skills Ma have. ‘Look at you, Kristen. You looked like a fine lady to me.’ Ma couldn’t get past the shock.
‘Yea, you look beautiful, honey.’ Uncle Pete agreed.
‘Thank you. I can be that fine lady, Veronica’ she touched her hand ‘ but not tonight. I’m starving.’ Everyone laughed at that. Even Ma appreciated the humor. Nothing much has changed, I thought.
‘John, I heard you’ll be taking these boys this weekend to your rest house. Why not let Kristen join? In fact, why don’t we all go? It’s three hour ride from here. Pete and I can handle that.’ Ma suggested.
‘Yea, that would be awesome’ Katherine agreed.
That will be on weekend. John asked me if that would be cool and I said sure. He wanted to have some boys’ time before they leave. Mason needs to finish high school. I understand that. They said they’ll pick Ma, Pete and me when school’s over and we’ll spend the rest of the summer on the rest house. I wondered how that rest house looked like.
John was silent for a moment.
‘Come on, John. I think it will be a blast.’ Pete helped in convincing John. ‘And come on, I am not invited to the boys’ night out? Really?’ he hurtfully said.
John looked at me as if he’s asking me about it. I nod and smiled. He looked at Mason.
‘It’ll be cool, dad. Kristen will be there, you know.’ Mason said. John playfully punched Mason on his left shoulder.
‘Okay then.’
Then there was a deafening sounds of cheers and laughter as if someone had just won a million dollars. I looked at Kristen. I was surprised that she’s looking at me, too. She smiled lightly an I smiled back.
I couldn’t say that I miss her even though I know I do and I badly wanted to. Mason and I are starting to be best buddies and I can’t afford to lose that closeness we now have. But I can’t afford to lose Kristen too. I’ve been waiting to be with her my whole life. But it seems like I just lost her. And what’s worse, is that she’s now with my younger brother, of all people.
