Chapter three

‘She’ll be here in two days.’ That definitely pushed the air out of my lungs. And it’s not the idea of my best friend actually coming home to visit m. But it’s more on where the news came from. It was from my brother whom I met just minutes ago. He knows Kristen, that’s for sure. But how? How did they meet? Are they going to the same school or something? We were still on the table. I suddenly lost my appetite. How in this world did they know each other? Okay, so maybe I’m reacting too much. It’s not like their a couple or something. Oh wait, are they?

I couldn’t hold my curiosity any longer so I asked Mason about it. ‘You know Kristen, huh?’ i asked. He smirked as if I asked the most stupid question. ‘ What does that mean?’ There’s something about this kid that riles me up. It’s his way of talking. He’s not even looking in the eye of the person he’s talking to. That’s not appropriate, as what Ma taught me.

‘Of course I know her.’ He answered as if the question was a simple Math.

‘How?’ I inquired further. This is the first time that I’m talking to my brother and I must say, it was a rough start.

‘She lives by the next street after ours. So we practically meet every day. And we go to the same school. In fact, we’ll graduate on the same school in less than a month.’

How old is he? He’s my brother and he’s a senior too? I will be graduating in less than a month too, I want to spit out. Maybe at that point, I was totally disgusted with the way he talks. He has his way of talking disrespectfully.

‘How come?’ the creases on my eyebrows are evident, I’m quite sure about that.

He was somewhat caught off guard with the question. I can tell.

With a hint of laughter, he asked ‘How come ‘how come?’ then he burst out laughing. That sets me off. After some time of laughing alone, he managed to answer my question. ‘ Oh, mom told me that I started school a bit younger so we’re practically seniors at the same time.’ He looked at Katherine for some sort of confirmation. But she looks anxious. Maybe because of the way this kid in front of me reacts. Or, as he just said, we’re both seniors.

‘Um, Matt, how was school?’ Katherine hesitantly asked me. I don’t know how to answer that question without getting into the particulars, just like the way I answer when Ma used to ask the question. But I thought of the safest way to answer a question.

‘Good.’ I replied. She nodded her head while smiling.

‘So, I’m sure you’re the school’s catch or something. From the way you look, there must be plenty of girls going crazy over you, huh?’ John said with approving gazes.

‘Not really.’ I answered bluntly.

‘Look who’s humble?’ uncle Pete playfully punched me on my left arm. ‘Well. Let me tell you something. There are indeed plenty of girls throwing themselves at him. When I say throw, I meant THROW.’ Uncle Pete, with exaggeration, emphasized the last part.

‘Shh.’ Ma tried to silence him. ‘That’s..’ she seemed embarrassed. But I know it’s just nothing serious.

‘That’s what I thought.’ John said and they burst into a loud guffaw.

‘But there’s this one girl who captures his heart every single day.’ Uncle Pete spoke as if he’s storytelling to a kid before going to sleep. If stares can bore holes into people, I certainly gave a hole to uncle Pete’s eyes. And he got the message before he continued with that story again.
