Matt
Weekend’s here. And I’d like to take some rest from it. It’s kind of busy. Kristen and Mason were having their coffee in the kitchen table alongside Ma and Pete. I just got up from bed when I greeted all of them.
“good morning’ I greeted. “Where are they?” I asked.
‘Who are ‘they’” Mason answered my question with another question.
“John and Katherine?” I replied.
“Who are they?” Mason repeated.
“John. And Katherine.” I answered back, kind of disgusted.
“Honey, you know what.. you can call them mom and dad, you know.” Ma said with a smile. I was caught off guard by the sudden suggestion. It has always been Ma and Uncle Pete. I grew up calling my parents that. Not mom and dad.
“I can share, you know. Man, call them mom and dad please.’ Mason suggested. Then he laughed.
“What’s funny?” I asked.
“Nothing. You just blushed, you know. Like a teenage girl.” Mason kind of like shouting because his voice’s too loud. Why would I be flushed? I can call them mom and dad if I want to. It is easy. Is it?
“yea, come here , girl. Sit next to me. I’ll hug you like teenage girls do.” Kristen mocked.
“Yea, what’s with the mood?” I ignored them all. “you all seemed so happy.”
“Why shouldn’t we?” Mason replied.
“No, not that. Why are you all so jumpy and crazy or something.” I looked at each one of them. They’re eyes have wrinkles on its sides because of too wide grins. Finally, I looked at Pete who’s been quiet for quite some time now.
“What’s the matter?” I asked Uncle Pete.
“Nothing, son.” He answered. Then, he said. “It was John’s birthday today! He’s been out for ike twenty minutes with Katherine to buy us some foods, you know. So we should be happy.”
“Really?” I asked.
“Yes. Really, man. We all have our presents ready. Do you have yours?” Mason asked me. I looked at each one of them. First, MA then she nodded. I’ll take that as a yes. Uncle Pete. Nod. Kristen. Nod. Okay, I’m doomed.
“Oh, I don’t have any. I didn’t know.” I defended myself.
“I have an idea!” Kristen almost jumped out of her chair when she said, giggling.
“How about, you call him ‘DAD’? When you greeted him , I mean.” Then they all agreed to Kristen.
“Come on, that’s not a gift.”
