Chapter 5

"I don't know.." I say. "I also don't understand how I got the bruise."

"Maybe you hit your leg in your sleep? We all know how easily you bruise," Aaron suggested.

"Then how would we explain the giant circle in front of us?" Michelle said.

"Does anyone get Internet on their phone out here?" I ask. I have an idea.

"I do. It isn't that great, but it'll do," Kareana informs me.

"Can I see it?" I ask her.

"Sure," she says as she hands it over to me.

"I'm going to see what the Internet has to say about this circle," I explain.

"That's smart," Michelle says.

"That's why I'm doing it," I say, laughing.

I typed in a description of the circle into google. Many links appear, but I click on the first one. It takes me about a minute to read it. Once I'm finished, I look up. My friends are staring at me.

"What did it say?" Aly asks.

"It says the circle is harmless. If you're just standing or walking through it in the daytime, that is. But if you plant something, it won't grow. And..." I trail off.

"And what?!" Kareana asks, interested.

"And if you put someone's hair into the circle, you not only kill the person whose hair it belongs to, but you also have sacrificed your soul to the devil," I say.

We're all speechless. What do you say after that? I mean seriously. We all assume we're friends and we wouldn't place another ones hair into the circle, but our expressions show doubt.

"Are we just going to stand here all day?" Kareana asks, impatient.

"Whoa, dude. Calm down. I'm thinking," I say.

"About what?" Aaron asks.

"Whether or not to put your hair into the circle," I joke. "Ha, no. I'm really just trying to figure out what the figure had to do with the circle."

"Well we can walk and do that," Kareana says.

"Um.. Okay," Michelle says as we start walking over the log and through the circle.

We were at the edge of the circle when I stopped. I am walking behind the group, looking at the ground. At the edge of the circle, something caught my eye. There weren't many, but there were few dark strands of hair.

Whose hair is it? And who put it there?

I guess time will tell...

We finally got bored of walking and turned around. We got back to the tents. I'm curious as to what time it is.

"Hey Kay, what time is it?" I ask Kareana.

"Um. It's 2:42." She says.

Although we ate sandwiches for breakfast, we got up fairly late. It was 11:21 when we left to explore.

"Does anyone want to go swimming?" Aly asks.

It is kind of hot out. And there's a lake that looks wonderful right now. I wonder if it feels as great as it looks.

"That's the smartest idea you've had all day," I tease.

"Oh shut up," she says.

We changed into our swimsuits, and stand on the lakes edge. We look at one another, and jump in.

"Aaahhh!" Aaron screams like a girl.

"What?!" We all ask at once.

"...it's cold," Aaron admits.

"Don't be a pansy," Cole tells him, laughing.

After about 15 minutes of us goofing off and enjoying the cool water, Aly breaks the silence.

"What the..?" she asks.

I wasn't sure what she was talking about at first. But then I saw it. The lake was starting a strong, clockwise current. How was that even possible?

"I think we should get out," Michelle says, fear in her voice.

Everyone but Kareana, Aly, and myself get out.

Aaron and Cole went into the woods to pee and have a bro moment. If peeing together is how boys bond, I'm glad I'm not a guy.

"I have a pool in my backyard, I'll be okay," Aly says.

"Guys, this isn't the same. Something is happening. Please, get out!" Michelle begs.

I finally decided to get out. I was tired anyway.

Just as I wrung out my hair, Michelle let out a blood curdling scream.

I jump, and turn around.

There in the middle of the lake, trying to fight the current but constantly being pulled under is Kareana. Aly followed me out of the water.

"Kareana!" I scream!

I was about to jump in and help her, but Aly grabbed my wrist.

"Don't, Kayla," she warned. "It was going to happen sooner or later."

"What are you talking about!?" I ask, scared and upset. "Kareana is drowning! We have to help her!"

Aly said something, but her voice was drowned out by Kareana's scream. Her scream was cut short as the current pulled her under one last time.

ANOTHER QUICK UPDATE! YAAAY!

Do I get an award? No, okay.. xD

Suspense is a main character in this chapter! I hope you guys are enjoying the story! :D

On a serious note, I have WAY more reads than I do votes. Could you please vote if you like the story? I'm not going to be one of those writers that won't update until they get a certain amount of votes, but having some would be nice.. Plus they're great confidence boosters.

Anyway, enough with that. Happy reading!

*hula hoops rings of fire* (;
