Chapter 9

Kareana's POV

I am still sitting behind the bush the figure and I conversed behind.

The figure told me what it wanted, and once I agreed, it left soon after. It said something about having to return to his master.

Just as I'm sitting behind the bush, drying my eyes, I see Cole storm off from something Kayla said. I can tell by the hurt look on Kayla's face that she didn't want any of this to happen.

"Kayla..." I say without realizing it, so desperate to reach out and comfort her.

She jerks her head up from looking at her shoes at the sound of her name. By the way she's looking at our friends- I mean her friends considering one of them stabbed me in the back, I can tell she thinks one of them said her name.

Aly, Aaron, and Michelle look at each other in confusion. Neither of them were the cause of her name. They all denied saying it, so Kayla focused her attention back to her black converse.

"Kayla.." I say again, this time out of sadness. I miss her. I know she's in pain. There's no way she would put my hair in the circle, she's too sweet.

Once again, she looks at her friends. Like last time, they deny it. In the midst of their conversation, her name slips off of my tongue again.

"Kayla.."

This time, she knows it wasn't them. She was talking to them. Although the wind is drowning out my call for her, she can still barely hear it. However, from the confused expression on her face, I can tell she doesn't know who is calling her.

A few moments later, Kayla stands up from the log, and starts walking clockwise around the lake, towards me.

She's about 10 paces away from me. I'm still hidden behind the bush, but if she continues walking, I won't be for much longer. I can't let her see I'm still alive. It will put her in so much danger. More than what she's already in...

"Kayla." I say, one last time.

She suddenly stops at the sound of her name. This time, her expression is different. It takes me a few moments, but after reading her face, I realize she recognizes my voice.

She starts looking around for me. I shrink lower to the ground, hoping to remain invisible.

"Don't let her see you," the figure whispers in my ear.

"Really?! I'm just hiding in the bushes because we're playing hide-n- go seek!" I sarcastically whips per.

"Remember the deal, Kareana," the way its raspy voice says my name sends chills down my spine, "I don't have to go through with my part," it reminds me.

"I know," I say, defeated.

"Kareana?" Kayla says to nothing in particular.

"Don't be seen," the figure reminds me once again, before it disappears in thin air.

Logan's POV

I have Kareana right where I want her. She believes one of our friends placed her hair in the circle.

Kareana is my ex-girlfriend. I feel nothing but friendship for her. I have Lea (well not at the moment, but I will do whatever it takes to get her back), and Kareana has, or had anyway, Cole.

I found her hair that had fallen onto the hoodie that she wore yesterday. She placed the hoodie into, what I'm assuming is her tent, when they had the fire going the first night they arrived. I snuck in and grabbed the first hair I found. It just so happened to be Kareana's.

At the moment, I need Kareana. I need her to be on my side. Since she believes one of our friends betrayed her, she agreed to get a hair from each friend. The more hairs I place into the circle, the stronger I become. I need to get Lea back. I will do whatever it takes, even kill my friends.

I am watching Kareana and Kayla through the trees. They don't see me, but I see them. If Kayla sees Kareana, all hell will break loose.

You see, Kareana and I made a deal. She's going to pretend she's dead. That's what our friends believe. While they're elsewhere, she is going to go to the tents and get a hair. Once she got the hair, she's going to give it to me. I think we all know what I'm going to do with it afterward.

You're probably wondering why I don't just get the hair myself.

Well, if this backfires, Kareana will be to blame in our friend's eyes. She'll try and blame it on me, but they don't know who I am. They think Lea and I are already back home.

Once I get what I need, I'm going to kill off Kareana. She will be useless. If she proves she isn't worthy of survival, she will die much sooner than she thinks. Of course I didn't tell her that she's going to die. I told her she'd make it out alive. That was the deal. If she got the hairs, I'd be sure that she survived. Which is totally not the case. Her hair has been put into the circle. She's going to die one way or another. But until I get a hair from everyone, I'm going to have to do my best at keeping her alive. If I fail, I'll just get someone else. Simple as that.

Kayla almost found Kareana, but just as she got to the bush Kareana is hiding behind, Aly called for Kayla. Kayla turns at the sudden sound of her name.

"What?" She yells back to Aly, who is still on the other side of the lake.

"Come back over here! We're gonna start a fire!" She tells Kayla.

"Oh, okay," Kayla replies. She takes one last look at the bush and returns to her friends across the lake.

She sits back down on a log, in between Aly and Michelle.

I return back beside Kareana.

"Remember, no one is to know you're still alive. You're dead to them," I remind her, placing a hand on her shoulder as she jumps at the sound of my voice. And soon you'll be dead to me, I think, but don't say.

I will have Lea back. Soon.

And my plan will fall into place. Soon.

Soon, all hell will break loose.

A/N

Sorry the update took so long. I've been busy, and writer's block is actually a thing. I have started another story, Why Me?, and I will not just focus on one story, I will alternate between them, depending on which I have an idea for.

I also apologize that this chapter isn't the most interesting, but filler chapters are important or a story would be over within a few chapters; plus, they build character.

Anywho, how's the story so far?

What do you think is gonna happen?
