Chapter 8
Kayla's POV
We all gathered around the fire, trying to figure out what in the world just happened.
First, a part of my dream was true. The Devil's Circle does exist. I thought it was just my brain running into overdrive. It tends to do that a lot, even in my sleep.
Second, a whirlpool started in a lake. That not even possible, according to the laws of physics. But it sure as heck happened. Which leads us into number three.
And third, Kareana was caught in this current, but when Cole and I went to look for her, she disappeared. It's unlikely and confusing. A girl doesn't just disappear.
"So what's next?" Michelle asks, shaking uncontrollably, looking at me.
"I-I don't know," I stutter.. "My dream only included me and the figure. And it ended with it jumping towards me."
"One of you backstabbers put her hair in the freaking circle. You killed her, and now you want to know how to mourn?" Cole snapped to no one in particular.
He's right. Someone sabotaged Kareana. And it was one of us.
"Cole. I'm sure it was a mistake. I can't-" I start.
"Don't tell me this was a mistake. You don't accidentally kill someone. Even if you're drunk driving, you chose to drive, knowing damn well there's a possibility you could hurt someone," he says, standing from the log we placed around the fire, "all of you just leave me alone. You killed my world, you might as well kill me too," he says, staring at each of us. He walks back to the lake, and sits on the dock.
"Well. He's taking this greaaat!" Aaron says, trying to lighten the mood.
"Was that necessary? She's gone, Aaron. Of course he's upset," Michelle says, furious. Kareana was her best friend, too.
She meant something to all of us. It's not going to be the same without her.
"I wonder if Logan and Lea are home yet," Aly says, trying to break the tension.
"Hmm. Probably," Aaron says.
Logan and his girlfriend, Lea, came to this spot for a 'romantic camping trip' a week before we planned to arrive. They were going to head home just as we were going to start our last summer memory.
It's Tuesday, August 5th, 6:34 pm. The sun is starting to set, but there is still plenty of light. Cole is still sitting on the dock. Aaron, Michelle, Aly, and I are sitting on the logs by the fire pit. It's a perfect, summer evening. Temperature-wise, at least. It feels about 70 degrees. The low for tonight is 52. The wind is blowing, but not too strong.
Someone calling my name brings me out of my thoughts.
"What?" I ask my friends.
"We didn't say anything..?" Aly says.
"One of you said my name," I say, chuckling.
"No, we didn't. You're going crazy!" Michelle teases, backing up Aly.
"Kayla"
I hear my name being called again, a hushed whisper. It's barely audible over the blowing wind.
"See? I told you I heard my name," I say, satisfied that I'm right. I don't like being wrong. Then again, I don't know of anyone who does.
"What are you talking about, dude?" Aaron says. "Nobody is saying your name.."
"Kayla"
This time I know they didn't say it. I watched them.
I look around. Someone is calling my name, but I don't know who.
