I found myself thinking into the past. Into Cole. No matter how much I didn't want to, somewhere deep down I would always love him. As friends, as lovers, or as enemies I'd still love him. There were moments where he would set my heart ablaze with emotion at the simple thought of him. The small stream I sat by was pretty and quiet as it rushed over the slippery rocks.
My paws padded lightly on the pebble, sniffing around in search of a meal. Catching the scent of an organism, I turned in that direction. Only, this organism was a female wolf. Not a werewolf either, a wolf. She growled and pawed the ground, protecting whatever was behind her. I heard the roar too late, and the bullet went whizzing past my bewildered gaze. It pierced deep into the female wolf's lower region. It was in a bad spot, she wouldn't make it. Not quickly though, slowly and painfully.
I turned towards the poacher and pulled my lips up in a snarl, his gun pointed at my head. I didn't regret nor fully accept what I did next, it was pure and cold. Instinct.
Charging forward and dodging past tree's, I sunk my teeth into his leg. Tasting blood, I dug harder and pulled him leg off. Filthy human. I left him there to bleed out or receive help. I didn't care either way. He'd transform painfully or he wouldn't survive the change. Nudging the wolf, I whinnied and watched as she desperately tried to crawl back to her home den. A shot like that and she would bleed out for hours. To end her misery I bit down on her neck, quickly washing away her life. I almost felt the gratitude and worry ooze off her bloody body. I was curious to what she was protecting, and stepped forward to investigate.
What I saw next broke my heart.
Two pups, identical in size and shape, slept in the dark corner. Their ribs were protruding and saliva dripped from their thirsting mouths. They were shivering and flees covered their chestnut coats. The pups wouldn't have been more than two months old. And now they were motherless.
At that thought, something changed inside me. A feeling I wasn't quite familiar with. An void I didn't know was empty was filled, and a longing to protect those two were all I could think. It consumed me, and suddenly I could feel their emotions.
I couldn't carry them back to the pack house in the shape they were in. Not only that, but I wouldn't be able to carry them both without leaving one behind defenseless. Curling up next to them, I allowed them to cuddle into my shaggy fur. They consumed my warmth, like ice cicles against me. I laid there until the sun went down, before exiting the den. Searching around for something to hide them with, I found some umbrella leaves and spread them around the opening, making sure nothing would notice it.
I stretched and yawned before getting to work. I hunted for rabbit and successfully captured two, trotting back to the den with pride. I stuffed my way inside and proceeded to feed the pups.
When morning rose, I dragged one pup out and hid the other again, using my human form to set up traps before sprinting off towards the ack house. It was typically a three hour run, but I made it there in half that. A crowd was waiting for me, the infamous Nicklus among them. I didn't have time to explain it to them. I dropped the pup off with strict orders to watch over her until I returned. I got back to the den even faster than my first run, stopping in my tracks. The leaves were disarrayed, someone had either entered or left. I was happy and worried to find the den empty, meaning the pup more than likely wondered off by itself.
I followed the scent to the stream, where the pup was lapping happily at the crystal water. I smiled in relief and watched as he turned towards me.
It happened so fast I couldn't process it. The bobcat lept out and latched onto the belly of the pup, and a whimpering howl screeched its way into my ears. My heart stopped and I impulsively pulled the feline off of the pup, baring my fangs at her. She crept into the shadows still watching in silence. I examined the pup, crying over him. The entire stomach area was ripped wide open, and his eyes rolled back. The pup was alive, but barely. Maybe three hours of life left in those precious eyes. Acting quickly, I picked the pup up by the scruff of his neck and leapt forward, running towards the pack. I made it back with a record time, laying the dying pup down and whimpering over his body. I heard a pack member call for the doctor, but I knew there was only one way to save its life.
I shifted back and a blanket was thrown over me. The doctor finally arrived and before he spoke I knew the words that were coming before they happened.
"I'm sorry, these pups won't last the day. The other is terribly sick and this one is... well that injury." Doctor Trey explained, eyeing the pup with anguish. The idea from earlier popped into my head, and I raised my eyes in hope.
"There is ... one way." I said, tears slowly stopping and determination filling its place.
"No I can guarantee you that I've considered every way and there is absolutely no way to save them- wait.... you don't mean?" Trey cut off, looking up at me with horror.
"I do mean it." I nodded.
"That might not even work, not to mention the pain they'd have to go through if it didn't!" He argued, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Trey, I imprinted with them. They are now mine." I confirmed, assuring him this was the only way. Gasps were heard around my as the pack realized the severity of the situation.
If these pups died, I would too. We shared a life thread now. Our fate's were twined.
"Someone bring me a knife! And be quick about it!" Trey shouted, laying the two pups beside one another. The pack passed forth a knife, and I was quick to cut into my wrist. I offered up equal amounts of blood to each pup. They were going to survive it, I could feel it in my bones, and in my very core. The heart.
After biting into both of the wolf pups with earnest and determination, we all waited for it to start.
The transformation.
