PROLOGUE:

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

NO ONE REALLY UNDERSTOOD LAVERNA PIERCE. Maybe because of how brusk she was to anyone she talked to– maybe that's why Michelle Jones and her got along so well. Michelle was Laverna's only friend because everyone else saw her as weird.

Weird because she was labeled as gypsy— and according to Flash Thompson, trash. She was seen as dirt poor who shouldn't be in high school long because she'd probably drop out before graduation to support her family.

Obviously, that hurt Laverna but she didn't show it. She used her hatred to help her family. If she was called that, why not be one? The young girl never knew what she did was wrong.

She just never understood why the other 10-year-olds on the playground got certain things she couldn't have. So, during recess, Laverna Pierce would take her friend's toys so she and her older brother could play together. However, she never got home with these toys because the teacher would always check her bag for the stolen items.

Even from a young age, Laverna didn't have a chance for a normal life. She grew up in a 2 bedroom apartment with her father, stepmother, and brother. She shared a room with her brother in a bunk bed. The rent was almost always late, leaving the family on edge when they would be threatened with eviction.

Laverna's brother, Chance, was smart. He had grown up and now was in community college on scholarship while working as a manager at the local diner down the street.

Laverna was barely 16 with straight A's. Just like Chance she was smart, Laverna wanted to do something with her life— if she just had the means to. She did have a part-time job at a pizza parlour but it wasn't enough, that's where crime came into the picture.

And that leads us to where Laverna is now, stuck in an alley, waiting for her next victim.

It had been two hours since the end of school and the young teenage girl had managed to pickpocket three people. Sadly, each person had about 50 bucks on them.

It was getting late and Laverna knew she should get home for dinner. Maybe the money she got today could help with rent.

She sighed, giving up on her hunt, and entered the busy street.

Laverna bumped into someone, who yelped in surprise. She froze, looking down at the boy who picked up his homework.

It was Peter Parker, a boy from her school.

With no expression, Laverna walked away. She knew it was her fault that Peter had dropped his homework but why would she bother associating with him and apologising?

Little did Laverna know, she would be seeing a whole lot more of Peter Parker.
