Prologue
I gripped tightly to the bridge railings, choking on sobs as I scanned the endless stretch of water. I could feel the salty tears running down my face as I took in the last scene I would see on this earth. It was a peaceful scene; the clear blue, never ending sea merging with the cloudless sky and ripples being caused in the water by the gentle sea breeze.
I watched as two birds flew across the sky and immediately envied them for their freedom which I would never have. They didn't know how lucky they were.
I took a deep breath, my entire body shaking as I climbed over the railing and stood on the ledge, facing the sea with no restrictions preventing my from the jump.
I peered into the depths of the deep blue water, wondering what it would feel like to be smothered by the waves. Would death come instantly? Would I first become unconscious? I didn't know, but I knew that any outcome was a better option than staying on this earth for a minute longer. My gaze travelled from the sea to my arms, slowly observing each individual scar etched into my skin and wondering how different my life would have been if I could be happy. I closed my eyes, letting out a deep breath before opening them again. This was the point where I was supposed to be reminiscing on the past, but I stopped storing memories a long time ago.
I was pulled out of my thoughts by a deep, unfamiliar voice.
"Hi there."
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. The one time I wanted nothing more than to be alone, I was interrupted. Typical. The voice continued when I said nothing.
"If you're going for a swim, that water looks pretty cold."
"Please go away," I sobbed quietly, "I want to be alone."
"I would feel much better if you were alone on this side of the railing."
I sighed exasperatedly, waiting for this guy to give up and leave like everyone else. When I didn't hear anything else, I turned my head to make sure he was gone. I was surprised, however, when I found a pair of bright green eyes staring back at me.
